Past president, Randy Shults has resigned. Randy traveled from Walland to attend our meetings and now he is planning to join the Maryville/Alcoa club. Sadly, our loss is their gain! Randy, we will miss you! Thank you for your service to RI and our club!
Our club just learned we have earned a District Simplified Grant of $2,500.00 to support our Haiti Water Project! Great News! A big thank you to Jim Palmer and his committee for all of their continued work on this project!
Mark your calendars on June 13 and August 8 our meetings will be held at Oak Ridge Utility District. They are on the Oak Ridge Turnpike, on Jefferson Circle. Thanks to Ben Andrews for volunteering ORUD. We will NOT be meeting at the church those two weeks.
Please see Austin Lance or Nancy Donsbach if you can help out with CASINO NIGHT at ORHS's Graduation Celebration on the night of Thursday, May 31. We need a few more Black Jack dealers and Texas Hold'em players to work the party from 10-4. Please let one of us know if you can help!
We also need folks to help with clean-up starting at 5:00 a.m. June 1.
We had many Happy Members this week - we were especially excited to have a lot of graduations to celebrate! Forgive me if I missed anyone.

The Program:
Robin Textor introduced us to our speaker today, Ambassador Victor Ashe. Ambassador Ashe holds the distinction of being the longest serving mayor of Knoxville. He also served as Ambassador to Poland from June 2004 until October 2009. He was the 24th Ambassador who was assigned to serve in Poland. In addition, to his 16 years of service as Mayor of Knoxville, he has also served as a Tennessee State Representative, a Tennessee State Senator, and he served as a staff assistant to United States Senator, Howard Baker.
He was a classmate of George W. Bush at Yale University. He graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree in History in 1967 and graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1974 where he earned his law degree. He also served in the US Marine Corp Reserves from 1967 thru 1973. He and his wife, Joan have two children, J. Victor and Martha. They reside in Knoxville.
Ambassador Ashe shared just what it is like to be an ambassador representing the United States and the President in a foreign land. He also gave us a brief history of Poland and its people and their culture. The United States recognized Poland in 1918 and established strong diplomatic relations and Poland remains a strong ally to the U.S. today. The opportunity to serve in Poland was a great match for Mayor Ashe, several years before he had established a sister city between Chelm in Poland and Knoxville, Tennessee!
Ambassador Ashe shared several amusing stories of what it is like to be asked by President George W. Bush to become an ambassador and to move his family and two pre-teen children to a another country. However, now his family would say living in Europe for five years was one of the best times of their lives! We want to thank Ambassador Ashe for his interesting program.
