The Speaker:
Ray Smith introduced us to our speaker today, Sandy Smith. Sandy is long time Oak Ridger who does all kinds of management and leadership training for companies of all sizes all around the country. To see more of what Sandy does, please visit his website http://www.sandysmithseminars.com .
Today Sandy shared some insights into the next generation of Oak Ridgers, the Millennials. Sandy shared some very interesting points on what shaped this generation's different values and attitudes.
Sandy had everyone in the room nodding and laughing out loud as he shared some of the differences of the" Y" or "Why" generation and the "Baby Boomer" generation. From Mr. Rogers Neighborhood to instant gratification, the Millennials have always had at least 57 TV channels to choose from.
One of the first slides he showed us was a picture of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and a older gentleman who looked a lot like Nikita Khrushchev - then Sandy asked us "just what would these two folks have in common chatting around the water cooler?"
Soon over 38% of our work force will be the Millennial generation and we need to find a way to engage them to keep them - not only at their jobs but in our community as well.
As Sandy said, "this generation will either quit and leave or worse quit and stay".
He finished his talk with this question, "When the millennial discover the Secret City just what will they find"?
Thanks, Sandy for such an entertaining and thought provoking program.
