Announcements:

Jay Pride continues to recuperate at home following surgery.  Members are all encouraged to send your thoughts and best wishes to Jay.

Foundation Awards:  Martha Hobson presented several Paul Harris Fellow awards.  One was provided to Edwina Crowe who was named a Paul Harris Fellow by her husband, Charles Crowe; the second was a Paul Harris +4 award to Dub Shultz!  Dr. Harry Galbraith was awarded a Paul Harris award posthumously.  In naming Dr. Galbraith, he was recognized, not only for being a polio survivor, but for his honesty and integrity.  Brenda Thornburgh was presented with Paul Harris +4; +5, and +6 pens.

Martha's report included the fact that seven first time Paul Harris Fellows have been awarded to members this year; five members have advanced to higher levels; and four awards have been awarded to non members.

Rotarian of the Year Award:

Cathy Toth, 2009 Rotarian of the Year, had the pleasure of announcing that the Rotarian of the Year for 2010 is Tom Lakers!  Congratulations, Tom, for all of you hard work and As Pat Postma noted, "Tom is creative and fun, but practical and business like as well and he makes generous contributions of his time and resources.

Cathy stated the following about Tom in her announcement of this award:  "Tom lives the Rotary ideals in very simple yet important and immediate ways.  He says 'Yes' whenever he is asked.  He says 'Yes' even in short notice, pinch hit situations.  He says 'Yes' even when it is not convenient or easy.  And he finds a way to say 'yes'" that is not just "Mr. Fix It", but is in the best interest of the requester.   He is a walking, talking example of Service Above Self, and I am honored to present the 2010 Rotarian of the Year award to Tom Lakers."

President's report:  As he ended his year as president, Charles asked club members to stand if they had participated in the extremely impressive list of projects members have organized:  Oak Ridge Schools Readers and Leaders Tutoring Program;  Adopt-a-Street Trash Pickup; ORBRC Dictionary Project; Haitian Water Project (Contributed $3,000 in support of the project and had members go to Haiti);  Willow Ridge Fellowship Evening; Rotary Hoops Basketball Tournament;  ORBRD Christmas Angels Project; 2009 Christmas Parade (Float Construction, Book Collection and Distribution; Christmas Bake Sale; World Rotary Day (Newspaper Insert); Melton Lake Trash Pickup; Oak Ridge Rowing Association Regatta Support; Polio Plus Project (exceeded our goal by more than $1,000); Club Auction (raised over $6,000); Hosted an Ambassadorial Scholarship from Hungary (2 days); 17thAnnual Literacy Lunch (Breakfast Rotary in conjunction with Altrusa International of Oak Ridge; Shelter Boxes for Haiti; Graduation Celebration for 2010 (Club provided $1,000 plus volunteers); GSE Team (club will service as a spoke host for the GSE Teams); Robertsville Youth Act Club (ORBRC served as sponsor); Club Picnic; Progressive Dinner .  Note:  It was impressive to see how many of our members stood multiple times!

He thanked members for their many contributions of time and energy over the past year and recognized several member for outstanding efforts, including Mason Oakes and his team as Sgt at Arms; Pat Postma, Emily Jernigan, the Fellowship Committee; Martha Hobson, Foundation Chair; Karen Bridgeman for all her technical support and he mentioned that "Karen lives Rotary"; Brenda Thornburgh who is "always there" and for her outstanding support of Polio +; and Robin Textor.

Notes from the July 7, 2010 Rotary Meeting

submitted by Nancy Donsbach.

The meeting began with Louise Mixon leading us in song.

Dub Shultz held a 711 Club Drawing....and Randy Shultz's name was drawn out ( the drawing seemed rigged to Tom Lakers!).

Randy will get to choose our next Paul Harris Fellow - congrats to Randy! Be watching, I am sure another 711 club drawing will be in the works!

Kelly Callison announced the date for next year's Literacy Luncheon....3/17/2011

He also asked for everyone to think of any contacts we might have for future Literacy Lunch speakers....if we have ideas, please contact him.

Tom Lakers and Veronica O'Hearn helped Nancy Donsbach introduce "The Rooster Game", which was a takeoff on "The Dating Game".

Tom asked...Dub Shultz, Ben Adams, Ben Andrews and Mike Morris (who was wearing his usual shorts, however, had added a necktie to his attire) to come up to the front of the room.

Nancy asked each of the "contestants", three questions about being the Rooster. These were answered quite candidly by each one....the most important question was "What do you think is the most important role of the Rooster"?

To which some answered "making money for the club", "taking up as much time as possible to limit the regular program"..."to making our president look wonderful!" Needless to say, Mike Morris had this answer and ultimately won the role of the 2010-2011 Rooster!

Mike promptly fined everyone a dollar to help with Ben Adams retirement fund....however, Mike only gave Ben $1.00 and kept the rest for the club! Thanks to everyone for being such good sports!

Several folks had Happy Dollars this week.... Gail Mattson and Gene Caldwell had just returned from holidays in Europe, Karen Bridgeman has a precious new grandson born last week, Emily Jernigan had just returned home from helping her children move (she got to spend special time with grandbabies as well), Freda Hopper celebrated all of the wonderful times she has spent with her daughter who is off to college this fall, John Iacovino celebrated the 4th with most of his children and grandchildren, John Reat brought a flyer to share about a self defense class taught by a family friend, Lou Rabinowitz announced a large grant that Roane State has received, and Veronica O'Hearn announced her husband is moving home after 18 months working in upstate New York.

Pete Peterson introduced a couple visiting from Germany. The gentleman is a Rotarian and a District Governor.

Speaker:

Nelson Patterson introduced our speaker, Jessica Murphy. Jessica was a Ambassadorial Scholar who visited Uruguay. She is a graduate of ORHS and Rhodes College and has now taken a job in Atlanta. She gave us a great overview of her time spent in Uruguay. Did you know Uruguay has over 12 million cows?
