Notes for the ORBRC Meeting August 25, 2010

Membership Club Assembly

We had our club assembly on the 25th. Nancy Donsbach gave everyone a copy of this year's club survey to fill out. If you missed the meeting, she will have them again at next week's meeting.

This is an opportunity for everyone to give their input on how to make the 2010-2011 Rotary year a great one! This is also a chance to sign up for different committees and service projects that you are interested in. We have both short term and ongoing projects for you to consider. Our goal is for each Rotarian to be involved in at least one project and committee. Opportunities range from the Haiti Water Project to volunteering at the spring Remote Area Medical weekend in Clinton.

Nancy also handed out printed pages of everyone's bio and address information from the Members Only Directory from the website. If you have any changes, please let her know. You may also go in and change them on the website yourself.

Karen Bridgeman spoke briefly about Membership. As you all know, over the last year due to different reasons (mainly illness, family and work obligations), we have lost several members, therefore, we want to add some new members over the next year. However, it is up to each of us to think about who you want to invite to breakfast and let them learn more about us and what we are doing to make a difference in our community. The tag line for this year's RI's Membership Committee is "Making clubs BIGGER,BETTER and BOLDER "and it is up to each of us to help accomplish this.

Announcements:

There were several folks with guests including soon to be member, Dr. Blake Hardin and Oak Ridge City Manager, Mark Watson (who visited with Parker).

Condolences to Tom Lakers and his family on the death of this brother, Paul Jay Lakers in Lexington. We have missed Tom these past few weeks.

We wish Kathy McNeilly well and we hope she will feel better and able to rejoin us soon. We miss you!

Cathy Toth and Hugh Ward of the New Generations Committee are taking applicants for this year's upcoming RYLA. This is a one day event for High School Juniors at a camp near Crossville. We are hoping to sponsor 5 students.

The event is on Saturday, October 2. This is one event that children or grandchildren of Rotarians may apply. It is a great day spent on building confidence, leadership skills and team building skills. Please see Cathy or Hugh for more info.

(Editor's note: Learn more about RYLA below)

The board voted for our club to work with the OR Sunset Club on a community fundraiser for "End Polio Now." RI has challenged each club in the district to do a fundraiser for Polio eradication. Therefore, on Saturday, October 2, we will be selling food in conjunction with the Oak Ridge Rotary Club's Annual Art Fair at Roane State Community College. More information will be forthcoming!

Happy Dollars:

Emily Jernigan and Karen Bridgeman were both happy to spend time with grandbabies recently. Karen over the Internet and Emily got to visit her grandbabies in person recently.

Jerry Young had only one thing to say...Christina is coming home on Saturday! He was excited and promised he had kept the house clean!

Nelson Patterson announced he has recently changed companies and now works for Wells Fargo. He will continue to works as a Financial Planner but is excited about some of the new products he can offer.

Parker Hardy was fined by the Rooster (and from what we heard almost everyone in the room was fined as well!) because the Oak Ridge Chamber was chosen as Best Chamber in the country - what a wonderful honor for Oak Ridge, Parker and his staff!

Speaking of the Rooster, he had the audacity to fine John Iacavino for contacting the newsletter editor to add to his Happy Dollars comments from last week - without paying for it! Roosters... we cannot seem to live with them or without them. The audience was so frustrated with him that he was frightened he might be impeached....therefore, he quickly announced he would not be in attendance on 9/1 and very wisely announced that Emily Jernigan would be taking his place!

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)is Rotary's leadership training program for young people. RYLA participants can be ages 14-30, but most clubs and districts choose to focus on a narrower age range, such as 14-18 or 19-30.

RYLA emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and personal growth, and aims to

  • Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth
  • Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders
  • Encourage leadership of youth by youth
  • Recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities

Rotary Haiti Water Project Team

Update from Jim Rushton

Recently ORBRC has taken new steps forward on the Haiti Water Projects thanks to the perseverance and dedication of Jim Palmer - with a little help from his friends. Jim asked that I update everyone on these recent events.

We have released $1000 for one of our two ORBRC Haiti Initiatives for Clean Water. This contribution was directed to International Action who is investing in chlorinators and water tanks for schools in the Port-au-Prince area. As you know the funding is handled through our 501(c)3 partner, the Zanmi Haiti Foundation. And the Zanmi Foundation added $600 from HAVE (Haitian Art and Visual Education) in Chicago, for a total contribution of $1600. Attached is the copy of the letter transmitting our funds from Pat Wurth, head of the Zanmi Foundation, to International Action. A website describing the International Action chlorinators can be found at

www.haitiwater.org/water_in_haiti/solution.php

International Action will be able to start new projects based on our contribution. They will be giving us periodic reports of the benefits to Haitian students arising from ORBRC's support.

The other current news is that we have friends from Oak Ridge that will be visiting Haiti at the end of this month (actually, this week). They plan to meet with representatives of International Action to further our relationship. ORBRC'er Jim Michel had planned to be part of that group from Oak Ridge but will not be able to make the trip due to a leg injury. And while our local friends are in Haiti, they also hope to meet with representatives from Pure Water for the World - Haiti Project to build that relationship. ORBRC is planning a school-based bio-sand water filter project with PWW-HP.

We will be keeping the ORBRC Haiti Water Project Team informed of new developments. Nancy Donsbach has asked us to give a report to the entire club at a future meeting.

Thank you for your continued interest and support.
