 A FRIENDLY REMINDER

Dues are due May 1 for the coming Rotary year.

If you haven't yet sent your annual or semi-annual payment for Rotary dues, please don't be offended by the friendly reminder that'll pop up in your email box in the next few days -- we just want to be sure we haven't overlooked one another!

If you need another copy of your statement, please contact Treasurer Robert Weir at rwcpa@boweir.com.

GSE TEAM AT ORBRC

The Group Study Exchange team from India will visit with our club this week.

The Rotary Foundation's GSE program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for businesspeople and professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 who are in the early stages of their careers.

The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits in paired areas of different countries. For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country's culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.

In a typical four-week tour, applicants participate in five full days of vocational visits, 15 to 20 club presentations, 10 to 15 formal visits and social events, two to three days at the district conference, three to four hours per day of cultural and site tours, and three to four hours per day of free time with host families.

This inbound GSE team from District 3312 -- and the team of young professionals from East Tennessee sponsored by our district (District 6780) who make up our outbound team -- will be considered TRF "alumni" after they comlete their study, and as such will be eligible for membership in Rotary clubs in their own communities.

Here's a trivia question to ponder: Which current or former member(s) of our club participated in GSE Team travel outside the U.S. and where did he/she/they go?

Perhaps the rooster(s) will offer a "get out of jail free" card for the correct answer at Happy Dollars this week!

711 DRAWING ON THE HORIZON

Nope, we're not awarding Slurpee gift certificates or running a dice operation -- the 711 in the headline above commemorates the room number of the office from which Paul Harris (yeah, THAT Paul Harris) first organized Rotary meetings. It's become shorthand for Paul Harris Fellows in our club and many clubs around the world.

Once our Foundation Folks let us know that enough CURRENT Paul Harris Fellows have contributed to create another PH fellowship (hint: it takes $1000), a drawing will be held to deterimine which of them gets to name the NEXT PHF in our club. Increments of $50 get you a chance to name the name.

Confused? No need to be -- if you are already a Paul Harris Fellow, just get your checkbook out and talk to Dub Shults or Tom Lakers or click the underlined link to contact us.

Spring Fellowship Fun(ction)

Thursday, April 23 5-7 p.m. at Moondollars Cafe

in Historic Jackson Square

Join us for appetizers, drinks, and conversation.

Bring guests. Bring a bottle of wine to share.

Appetizers, coffee and tea will be provided. Fat Tire beer available from cash bar.

Catch up with club members you haven't chatted with in a while, and introduce yourself to those you don't know.

Let Lou Rabinowitz, preeminent skinny-tire cyclist, tell you about Fat Tire beer.

John Wheeler is chief sommelier, so you know he'll steer you in a good direction.

PLEASE ... RSVP to Emily Jernigan at emily@jernigans.net  just so we have an idea of how many appetizers to order.

See you there!

LONG-RANGE PLANNING RESET: APRIL 23

Repeating the announcement from last week (in large part because we don't have any new information): President-Elect Charles Crowe says the first part of the Long-Range Planning sessions, postponed from a few weeks ago, will take place Thursday, April 23, probably beginning after lunch and continuing until about 5 p.m. (leaving plenty of time to get to the fellowship event set for 5-7 that evening -- see below).  Watch for more details - perhaps via email.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS -- we lose!

We have had recent resignations from Tami Carroll, Dan Quinn, and Kay Whitman, all of whom cited their deep appreciation for the friendship and fellowship they had found in Rotary. Tami's schedule has presented a problem for some time; Dan and Kay are facing longer-term travel commitments in their work than previously anticipated. We wish all of them well and hope to see them among us again soon.

In addition, Richard Esposito has requested a leave of absence through the end of this Rotary year. As you are probably aware, he is returning to California newspapering, and he will use the time away from our club to look at Rotary connections in the Placerville, Calif., area.

For those of you who may not be aware of it, a Rotarian relocating to another community cannot "transfer" his/her membership to a new club. Every Rotary club is autonomous and chooses its own members. By taking a leave of absence, a member can visit area clubs in a new community -- remember that any Rotarian is welcome as a visitor at any Rotary club, anywhere in the world -- and look for a good "fit." The club the member is leaving can then suggest the potential member to the new club, in effect sponsoring that member, if an obvious match doesn't spring up during the visiting

process.

If you want more information on how this process might work for someone you know who has moved to our community with Rotary ties, holler at any membership committee person. For more information (and answers to some of Rotary's Frequently Asked Questions, click here.

And, an update on our numbers -- we lose an average of about 10% of our membership each year, primarily to business/travel conflicts, and we are close to that number again this year. Unfortunately, we are running behind on "replacing" those members, and we aren't growing our membership.

Have YOU thought about extending the gift of Rotary to someone? Remember that none of us would be here if we hadn't been invited by another member to join. The future of Rotary is in YOUR hands.
