 WELCOME TO LEIGHA'S LITTLE ONE!

Hudson William Edwards - 8 lb., 2 oz., 21 inches,

Thursday, April 16, 2009, at 8:58 a.m.

Congrats to mom and dad, Leigha and Blake,

and Big Sister Ella.

Brenda Thornburgh, Robin Textor (aka Kenny Rogers), and
Tom Thornburgh picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille,
at the District Conference Talent Show Saturday night.

20 ATTEND SEVIER CONFERENCE

A good time was had by all at the annual District 6780 Conference, held over the weekend at the new Event Center in Sevierville. Nearly 350 Rotarians and guests attended.

Robin Textor led a session on the Future Vision Project and Robin and Charlotte served as aides to Rotary International's PolioPlus Program Manager Carol Pandak. Lou Rabinowitz presented the speaker at a session on child mortality, Randy Shults was a presenter on a program that addressed expanding Rotary through youth clubs like YouthAct, and Karen Bridgeman and Brenda Thornburgh helped with program details. In addition, several of our members were seen wearing sergeant-at-arms vests, lending a hand in that "service above self" kind of a way.

In addition to those listed above, Randy's wife Stephanie, Charles and Edwina Crowe, Fred and Sandra Barry, Brenda's husband Tom, Dub Shults, Dick and Beverly Davis, Linda and Walt Brown, Christina and Jerry Young, and Henry Perry were spotted (and got makeup credits!).

Henry wowed the Saturday night crowd with some awesome blues harmonica -- he was the real talent of the talent show, along with Robin (aka Kenny Rogers) and the Thornburghs (aka Kenny's Backed Up Sangers), who brought down the house.

ORBRC earned third place for best electronic bulletin (right behind West Knoxville and Hamilton Place) and was honored again as a Star Club and a Globe Club.

Past Rotary International President Bill Boyd of New Zealand and PRIP Jim Lacy of Cookeville were in attendance, as was PRIVP John Germ of Chattanooga, who also is a trustee of The Rotary Foundation and chair of the committee overseeing the Gates Challenge response.

Seven plenary sessions were held, including a Rotary "Jeopardy" game led by Bill Sergeant of THE Oak Ridge Rotary Club, and nine breakout sessions covered membership, Foundation, and youth activities.

The three Oak Ridge clubs (announced from the podium as the morning, noon, and night clubs) hosted a hospitality suite that was well furnished and well attended. The weather was wonderful, the setting was gorgeous, the food was good (ask any of the attendees, and be sure to get the whole story about the roast pigs) -- all in all, a GREAT deal of fun.

Next year's conference is being planned for Chattanooga on this same weekend in April, and another multi-district conference (like last year's) is being considered for Nashville in 2011. Start thinking about it now!

TWO EVENTS THURSDAY
Long-Range Planning Session

The long range planning meeting will be held from Noon to 5 p.m. on Thursday in the conference room at Citizens First Bank, on Oak Ridge Turnpike.

In view of the time restrictions, this meeting will focus on setting goals and objectives for next year, and the development of a budget for 2009-2010.

A future meeting will be scheduled to determine the allocation of funds to projects.

Advance notice will be given of the date and time of the future meeting so members wishing to come to the meeting to support funds request will have the opportunity to attend.

 -- Charles Crowe, President-Elect

ATTENTION: PAUL HARRIS FELLOWS

711 Club Opportunity in Progress - Donation is $50 for the chance to name the next ORBRC Paul Harris Fellow.

Dig deep and see Dub Shults or Tom Lakers.

Greetings -- and an invitation from THE O.R. Rotary Club

We cordially invite you to our Seventh Annual Rotary Club of Oak Ridge Gala on Saturday, May 2, 6:30 p.m. at the Flatwater Grill Events Center in Oak Ridge.

The "Jewels-N-Jeans" themed event promises appetizers, drinks, and lively entertainment for a worthy cause.

Don a festive top with fun jewels, and your favorite pair of jeans. We will once again have a selection of silent auction and live auction items to bid on.

This event is our club's biggest fundraiser and the success of this Gala is dependent upon you, and generous community-minded contributors.
