WHEW! We did it!
Check the "Participation Matters" box at right to see for yourself: ORBRC managed again to meet its 82% monthly attendance objective.
The goal was set at the beginning of the Rotary year and represents significant participation in club meetings, service projects, and social activities.
Thanks to all our club members, the commitment to meeting (and exceeding) Rotary's goals really means we are more effective in service and fellowship.
Check the list of makeups to be sure you got credit for the extras YOU contributed (and let us know if we've overlooked your efforts). Take a minute to look over that list to see the variety of work being done in our community beyond the walls of our Wednesday meetings.
And, if you are looking for information on how YOU can plug in to make-ups through service and fellowship, click here.
We're looking for some volunteers who will help post attendance statistics in our online logs. If you think you'd like to serve the club this way -- in maybe 15 or 20 minutes a week -- let Veronica O'Hearn or Karen Bridgeman know!
And keep us the good work (and good works).
Roorda interviewed for
Ambassadorial Scholarship
From Pat Imperato
On 5/1, The Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club's Scholarship Committee (Pat Imperato, Dub Shults, Bruce Watson and David Harris) interviewed West Point cadet, Brennan Roorda, as a potential candidate for an Ambassadorial Scholarship.
Rotarian Wayne Stevenson arranged for the interview to be done via teleconference at ORAU's Center for Science Education. In cooperation with West Point's technical staff, ORAU technician Jaysun Burgess was able to navigate the Academy's multiple fire walls to set up the teleconference.
This small project exemplified ORAU's commitment to serving the community. It was extremely helpful to see Brennan as he answered the committee's questions.
Brennan is a 2006 graduate of Oak Ridge High School. As a junior at West Point, Brennan is working on a double major in comparative politics and Arabic. He has a 3.89 GPA. He wishes to study politics at the University of Cairo and to polish his language skills.
The Academy encourages cadets to apply for graduate scholarships and allows them to study for a post-graduate year before fulfilling their service requirements (5 years active duty and 3 years in the reserves).
The ORBRC Scholarship Committee has recommended that Brennan's application be forwarded to the Rotary District for consideration of a one-year Ambassadorial Scholarship.
GSE Team Leader safe
From DG Carol LaRue
Rotary International is happy and relieved at the safe resolution of the kidnapping incident involving Canadian Rotary club member Julie Mulligan in Kaduna, Nigeria.
We also thank the government agencies in both Canada and Nigeria for their hard work and commitment to achieve a safe end to a very difficult situation.
Our top priority from the beginning has been the safe return of Julie to her family in Drayton Valley, Alberta. Rotarians will continue to provide assistance and support to Julie and her family.
Meanwhile, Rotary leaders in Nigeria and Canada continue to cooperate fully with officials investigating the case.
Julie was in Nigeria leading a Rotary Group Study Exchange team from Canada. Group Study Exchange allows non-Rotary members from a variety of professions to travel abroad to interact with their counterparts, gain valuable intercultural experience, and broaden their worldview. The program is just one way in which Rotary promotes world peace and understanding.
Since 1965, more than 13,500 Group Study Exchange teams totaling 65,000 individuals from over 100 countries have participated. Last year, 565 teams traveled abroad.
ATTENTION: ONE MORE TIME!
WE NEED 3 MORE PAUL HARRIS FELLOWS
711 Club Opportunity in Progress - Donation is $50 for the chance to name the next ORBRC Paul Harris Fellow.
Donations will support things like the GSE Team from India that visited with our club and in our community last week and our nomination of a potential Ambassadorial Scholar.
Dig deep and see Dub Shults or Tom Lakers. Only three more fellows are needed to create a whole new one!
