2008-09 President Randy Shults passes the gavel to 2009-10 President Charles Crowe

2008-09 President Randy Shults passes the gavel to
2009-10 President Charles Crowe at the July 1 transition meeting.

CROWE INSTALLED AS PRESIDENT, TOTH HONORED

Charles Crowe was installed as the 30th president of Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club July 1 in an emotion-packed meeting that saw the return of a number of former club leaders and the passing of the gavel from 19 past-presidents of the club.

Randy Shults, 2008-09 president of the club, passed the gavel to Charles Crowe, 2009-10 president, just before Past District Governor Karen Wentz of the Maryville Club, standing in for DG Carol LaRue, swore in Crowe and the new club officers.

Cathy Toth, chair of the Youth Services Committee, and,

2009 Rotarian of the Year Cathy Toth with 2008 ROY Robin Textor

2009 Rotarian of the Year

Cathy Toth and Robin Textor

with Shults, driving force behind the establishment of the Robertsville YouthAct Club, was named 2009 Rotarian of the Year. Honors were conferred by 2008 honoree Robin Textor.

We were pleased to have several past presidents who are no longer active members of our club join us for the transition meeting, including Clyde Hopkins who served as our second club president in 1981-82, Roy Pruett (1983-84), Bo Harris (1992-93), and Wanda Craven (1995-96). Pat Postma stood in during the passing of the gavel for her late husband Herman Postma, who served as club president during the 1996-97 club year. Click here for more club history, including a full list of our past presidents and Rotarian of the Year award winners.

Charles has been a member of ORBRC since 1987 when he was sponsored by then-President Bill Thomas. A Paul Harris fellow, was elected President Nominee (which automatically advances to President-Elect) in December 2007. Prior to that, he served as VP for Internal Operations and was active in helping plan (and almost win) the District 6780 golf tournament in October 2007, when Robin Textor was District Governor and ORBRC hosted the event.

Over the past 20+ years, Charles has been an active participant in Club activities and a sponsor of several members. He served last year as chair of the Fund-Raising committee, leading the effort that will fund the club's charitable activities during his year as club president.

He also has served as Rooster (and will name HIS rooster this week), co-chairman of the Rotary Walk for Mankind, assisted with the Sergeant-at-Arms duties, and served several years as the Club's Classification Officer. Charles has also been active in many of the Club's volunteer activities and currently serves as a volunteer tutor at Woodland School.

Charles retired from the Department of Energy in 2006, after a 30-year career, and currently is the President and CEO of C&C Specialty Advertising. He and his wife, Edwena, have two grown children, Nicholas and Rebecca, who also now live in Oak Ridge, and who accompanied Charles and Edwena to the 2009 Rotary International Convention in Birmingham, England.

Over the coming weeks, we will introduce the other club officers -- President-Elect Nancy Donsbach, Secretary Veronica O'Hearn, Treasurer David Harris, vice presidents Freda Hopper and Kathy McNeilly, join Shults and Crowe -- and new board members. Stay tuned!

MYSTERY (DINNER)
PICNIC TIME!

From Pat Imperato

Our Annual Rotary Mystery Dinner will August 15th. This year it will actually be a picnic and Rotarians are encouraged to bring family, including children and grandkids, and friends.

The committee has found an absolutely gorgeous facility by the water with a wonderful covered pavilion that can seat 500 people -- rain or shine, we'll have fun! -- and the committee is planning lawn games for adults and kids.

Please sign up on the goldenrod colored sheets on the breakfast tables or contact Judi Gray (gray119@comcast.net)  or Pat Imperato (psimperato@aol.com).

The facility is about 20 minutes from downtown Oak Ridge and attendees will be sent directions via email a couple of days before the event so you can drive there on your own.

Cost is $25/adult and $5/child and the meal will be catered. Soft drinks will be provided but feel free to BYOB.

Don't miss out on the fun! Sign up by email or at this week's meeting!

CLUB SEEKS PARTICIPANTS FOR LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

Interested in some outstanding leadership training? Able to commit three Saturdays (one each in early August, mid-September, and mid-November) to the task?

The upcoming Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) program, sponsored by District 6780 and Rotary International's Heart of America Division, may be just the program for you.

RLI (http://www.rotaryleadershipinstitute.org/) is a multi-district, grassroots leadership development program of member districts organized into regional divisions in various parts of the world.

The Heart of America Division offers a series of leadership courses in three full-day sessions; those completing one session are eligible to attend the next. Courses are held in Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, and now, East Tennessee.

The courses are designed to provide Rotary knowledge and develop leadership skills in for individuals working in volunteer organizations. RLI is fun, interactive, and participatory and uses top faculty and facilitation techniques to make the experience valuable and rewarding.

Each of the 65 clubs in District 6780 can nominate Rotarians with an interest and potential for club leadership. Prior election to office or appointment as committee chair are NOT required; interest in future leadership opportunities (and not just that of club president) is the key.

Since Rotary club officers, board members and committee chairs change with each new Rotary year, every club needs enthusiastic, knowledgeable leaders.

The district and club investment in RLI will pay off for clubs and the district in the years ahead. YOUR investment will expand your abilities to lead in Rotary and in other areas of your professional and personal life.

The first session will be offered in our district on Saturday, Aug. 1; Session II will be held Saturday, Sept. 19, and Session I will be repeated for new attendees on that same date. Sessions I, II, and III will be presented on Saturday, Nov. 14.

All sessions will all be held at Church of God International Headquarters, 2490 Keith St., Cleveland, TN 37311 (I-75 exit # 25 - TN Hwy. 60) from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. eastern time.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE, please let Charles Crowe know just as soon as possible so he can meet the July 15 nomination deadline.

NATIONAL ROWING COMPETITION NEEDS LOCAL VOLUNTEERS

The 2009 USRowing Club National Championships will be held July 15-19 on Melton Lake (right outside our meeting venue windows), and volunteers are needed to help support the event.

US Rowing and the Oak Ridge Rowing Association are co-hosting the event, which will feature junior-, intermediate-, and senior-level events. More than 1,800 athletes competed in these categories at last year's club national championships in Camden, New Jersey.

Oak Ridge Rotary Club member Steve Spooner brought information about ORRA's need for volunteers for the event to our meeting last week and plans to attend ORBRC's meeting July 8, as well. Contact Steve, who is organizing volunteers, at rower2kss@yahoo.com.

From the web:

The Oak Ridge Rowing Association is a non-profit organization chartered in 1979. It is an organization of active rowers and rowing enthusiasts whose goal is to promote the sport of rowing in Oak Ridge as well as the entire East Tennessee region. Established in 1872, USRowing is the oldest national governing body for amateur sport in the U.S. Olympic hopefuls are members of USRowing, but so are men and women of all ages who row for fitness, competition and fun. As a membership organization, USRowing provides leadership and opportunities for all people to experience rowing from recreation to Olympic victory.
