District meetings Aug. 8, Knoxville

Plan now to attend the District 6780 seminars for the 2009-10 Rotary year.

Club leaders and club members who are serving in, or are interested in, one of these three areas of Rotary committee work within area clubs are encouraged to attend. The three different groups will meet on the same day, which should make it easy for club members with different areas of interest to carpool to the event.

Four seminars locations and dates have been arranged -- in Knoxville Aug. 8; in Cookeville Aug. 15; in Cleveland Aug. 22; and in Lynchburg Aug. 29 -- and the seminars will take place between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. (Hint: Find the one that fits your calendar and get your crew together!)

These seminars are appropriate for any Rotarian wanting to learn more about The Rotary Foundation, Membership and New Generations (Youth Act, Interact, Rotaract and Youth Exchange).

The Knoxville area seminars will be held at Pellissippi State Community College in the Goins Administration Building (thanks to AG Fred Martin for the arrangements).

Registration will begin at 8:30 AM and a continental breakfast will be available prior to beginning the meeting at 9 AM.

Let President Charles Crowe know that you are interested in attending; check with him for details on the Cookeville, Cleveland, and Lynchburg locations if the Knoxville date won't work for you.

You'll have a chance to meet district leaders and advance Rotary's work in our community and the world!

WANTED: Vols for the Velo

From Lou Rabinowitz

The bicycle races in Oak Ridge this year will be on Saturday, Aug. 22, and Sunday, Aug. 23, and your help is needed again. ORBRC provided substantial support through its "Breakfast Brigade" in the event's inaugural year, and organizers are counting on us again.

This year, the road race will be the Tennessee Bicycle Racing Association State Championship Road Race. This is kind of a big deal in the racing community, and a feather in our cap since we were able to get the championship in only our second year.

Last year we drew more than 200 competitors, mostly from Tennessee, but also from other states. This year we're hoping for 250 or more racers. We'll need quite a few volunteers for the weekend events, particularly for the road races on Saturday, Aug. 22.

I'd like to try to recruit enough volunteers that we'll have three shifts on August 22. Given the August heat, it would be good to have 2 ½ hour shifts rather than two 3+ hour shifts as we did last year.

Please contact us or watch for sign up sheets on the tables over the coming weeks.

Roosters flee the coup

Submitted Anonymously
The members of Breakfast Rotary were all shocked a couple Wednesdays ago when Parker Hardy and his two trusty sidekicks, Greta Owenby and Veronica O'Hearn, staged an armed "Rooster Coo" during the meeting.

President Charles had just explained to the members that due to the demands of making sure things were in place for his first meeting, that he was going to use the old Roosters for just one more week.

Former Roosters, Tom Lakers and David McCoy, came forward and immediately started to suggest that they should be given immunity for the coming year, when Parker Hardy jumped up from the audience and shouted that "He was tired of it, and not going to take it anymore!"

Parker even told President Charles that he thought that he was going to be "the voice of change," but the first thing that Charles does is bring back those old Roosters.

Equipped with water guns, the three ousted the old Roosters, and proceeded to convince the members to pay a dollar each to get rid of them.

Looks like we have a fun year ahead!

Youth Services meets Wednesday

Cathy Toth will lead a Youth Services Committee meeting after our club meeting Wednesday.

Cathy says the agenda is as follows:
  1. Discussion of RYLA - Coordinator
  2. Discussion re liaison to the Public Relations committee
  3. Upcoming plans for this year for Robertsville Middle School YouthAct Club
If you are a member of this committee (or would like to be), please plan to stay for the meeting, or let Cathy know that you are interested but cannot meet with the group this week.

MYSTERY (DINNER)
PICNIC TIME!

From Pat Imperato

Our Annual Rotary Mystery Dinner will August 15th. This year it will actually be a picnic and Rotarians are encouraged to bring family, including children and grandkids, and friends.

The committee has found an absolutely gorgeous facility by the water with a wonderful covered pavilion that can seat 500 people -- rain or shine, we'll have fun! -- and the committee is planning lawn games for adults and kids.

Please sign up on the goldenrod colored sheets on the breakfast tables or contact Judi Gray (gray119@comcast.net)  or Pat Imperato (psimperato@aol.com).

The facility is about 20 minutes from downtown Oak Ridge and attendees will be sent directions via email a couple of days before the event so you can drive there on your own.

Cost is $25/adult and $5/child and the meal will be catered. Soft drinks will be provided but feel free to BYOB.

Don't miss out on the fun! Sign up by email or at this week's meeting!
