From your Youth Services Committee Chair, Cathy Toth ...

The Robertsville Middle School YouthAct club held its first meeting for 2009-10 Tuesday at 7 a.m. at Robertsville.

The Executive Board has met a few times to plan things out and they will present projects to the full club to vote on. This is a fun meeting and should get us off to a good start.

Please let me know if you are interested in supporting this effort.

RYLA fun --

We did it again!

6th Annual Rotary Hoops Classic at Oak Ridge High School

Once again Gene Caldwell is coordinating this basketball event.  A lot of volunteers are needed to run this event smoothly and Gene is promising to give free T-Shirts.

The event is on Thanksgiving weekend. It’s a wonderful way to entertain your out-of-town guests and enlist their help as well.

On Friday November 27, four games go from 3:30 to 8 p.m, and on Saturday four games are played from 2:30 to 7 p.m.  Gene needs 11 people for each game.

Contact Gene at caldwell53@bellsouth.net and volunteer for one or more sessions (2 hours each session).

ORBRC sponsored seven high school juniors to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Sept. 26 and partnered with Men of Tomorrow to sponsor two more students.

RYLA is a one-day, hands-on, leadership skills development program open to outstanding high school juniors with demonstrated leadership qualities.  The program is run by the District and was held at Camp Nakinawa in Crossville.  The activities include leadership skills development exercises, a motivational speaker, meeting new people, and a lot of fun.  Our kids joined more than 120 other high school juniors for the day.

One of the best parts about RYLA is that it introduces Rotary to the next generation.

Usually, the weather is perfect.  This year…we missed perfect by one day.

ORBRC sponsors RYLA with a lot of class.  Juliana Stanley arranged for our club funds to cover a mid-sized bus to transport the kids, and Christina Young provided wonderful snacks for both the outbound and return trips.  “Kudos on the snacks!”, said one of the participants.

And the trip could not have happened if Tracy Larabee, David McCoy, and Mark King hadn’t been willing to spend a rainy day bonding in a wigwam.  In spite of the rain, it was a great day. Thanks to everyone for their help!

WANTED:

Help with our club newsletter

You may have noticed a distinct lack of newsletter circulation over the last several weeks as Karen Bridgeman has had work pressures that have cut into her volunteer time for the club.

If you have basic Microsoft Word skills and an interest in helping with some of the communications tasks, please let her know via email to rotarykb@comast.net.

9/30 Meeting Speaker

Jo Bruce from the Willow Brook Elementary 21st Century Community Learning Centers spoke about a new program called SMILE – Starting Mornings in Learning Encouragement.

Volunteers are needed to come to Willow Brook one morning a week to spend time reading, having breakfast, and talking to an identified student.

This mentoring relationship enables students to learn about their community and have another safe adult friend encouraging them to learn and grow each day.

There are many other mentoring opportunities to help students throughout the school day and after school to improve their literacy skills.

For more information or to volunteer contact Jo Bruce at 425-3205 or jbruce@ortn.edu
