Bonnie, twittering?
We got the following -- almost a "tweet" -- from Bonnie Carroll at 2:16 a.m. last Wednesday:
In Copenhagen at fascinating Rotary Club. Average age is about 35!! They are discussing obesity. – Bonnie
Guess we should count the make-up, right?!

Condolences are extended to our fellow Rotarian Jim Barnes on the recent loss of his sister and his wife's brother. Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers. |
Party ... ON!
Twenty-five Breakfast Rotarians and spouses got together at Willow Ridge Garden Center in Oak Ridge, for the second annual fall gathering.
We met in the beautiful setting Tom Lakers provided, among the flowering plants, fire pits, fountains, and bromeliads. We brought finger food and wine to share, and the conversations flowed for several hours.
The 'Party Crew' (aka Club Fellowship subcommittee of the Membership Committee) organizes several of events each year to give ORBRC members and guests an opportunity to socialize and become better acquainted with others in a relaxed, festive atmosphere. Watch the club photo album for pictures .... it'll take a little time to get them posted, but they are good! – Emily Jernigan

FREDA HOPPER WINS DOE SMALL BUSINESS AWARD
Our own Freda Hopper, Vice President for Internal Activities, was selected the Small Business Program Manager of the year for the U.S. Department of Energy. This is a coveted national honor within the Agency.
In a statement released by the Oak Ridge Operations Office, Manager Gerald Boyd said, "Freda is a strong advocate for small business participation in DOE procurement opportunities. This highly respected award recognizes her leadership to advocate the interest of small businesses in supporting Oak Ridge office mission needs."
The award was presented to Freda at the Annual Department of Energy Small Business Conference which was held in Long Beach, Calif., in August.
Freda is also demonstrating her dedication to Rotary by participating in the Rotary Leadership Institute.
Congratulations Freda! – Charles Crowe
Know the difference ...
As we approach the seasonal flu season (and drown in information about H1N1 flu) here's an easy way to tell the difference between the flu and a cold:
Symptom
Cold
H1N1 Flu
Fever
Fever is rare with a cold.
Fever is usually present with the flu in up to 80% of all flu cases. A temperature of 100°F or higher for 3 to 4 days is associated with the flu.
Coughing
A hacking, productive (mucus- producing) cough is often present with a cold.
A non-productive (non-mucus producing) cough is usually present with the flu (sometimes referred to as dry cough).
Aches
Slight body aches and pains can be part of a cold.
Severe aches and pains are common with the flu.
Stuffy Nose
Stuffy nose is commonly present with a cold and typically resolves spontaneously within a week.
Stuffy nose is not commonly present with the flu.
Chills
Chills are uncommon with a cold.
60% of people who have the flu experience chills.
Tiredness
Tiredness is fairly mild with a cold.
Tiredness is moderate to severe with the flu.
Sneezing
Sneezing is commonly present with a cold.
Sneezing is not common with the flu.
Sudden Symptoms
Cold symptoms tend to develop over a few days.
The flu has a rapid onset within 3-6 hours. The flu hits hard and includes sudden symptoms like high fever, aches and pains.
Headache
A headache is fairly uncommon with a cold.
A headache is very common with the flu, present in 80% of flu cases.
Sore Throat
Sore throat is commonly present with a cold.
Sore throat is not commonly present with the flu.
Chest Discomfort
Chest discomfort is mild to moderate with a cold.
Chest discomfort is often severe with the flu.
Thanks to club president Charles Crowe for the hand sanitizers he's provided for each table at our weekly meetings. Washing hands with soap and warm water for as long as it takes to sing "The ABC Song" or using hand sanitizers that have at least 60% alcohol content are the best way to stop the spread of germs.
Oh, and consider elbow- or fist-bumping in lieu of shaking hands or exchanging kisses! It will make you look cool (or silly) and has a serious impact on reducing the germ exchange.
