Tennessee's First Breakfast Club - Charles Crowe - President 2009-10

DICTIONARY PROJECT BEGINS

We will begin labeling the age-appropriate dictionaries for third-graders after the club meeting next week. Please plan to stay if you can -- one of those "many hands make light work" deals.

Albert Beasley is coordinating the sign-ups for those who want to help deliver the dictionaries to the nine elementary schools in Anderson County.

The delivery effort involves spending 10 minutes or so with each class, introducing yourself and Rotary and Breakfast Rotary to the youngsters, and spending a little time and effort with them, pointing out some of the features of the dictionary (they LOVE the sign language section, the longest word in the world, and looking up the word "volunteer" -- understanding that it's not JUST a football team).

Jim Bradbury has worked to organize this project for our club (and THE Oak Ridge Rotary Club, which takes care of the four Oak Ridge city schools, and the Clinton Rotary Club, which takes care of the three Clinton city schools) since he learned about it at a District Conference several years ago. We -- and lots of children across our county -- owe him our thanks!

From the District Newsletter ...

A Rotary Reminder:  As We Approach the Election Season . . .

Recently, a club in District 6780 received a letter from a political candidate requesting opportunities to speak at Rotary Club meetings. Rotary International's Standard Club Constitution expressly forbids endorsement of candidates for public office.

Remember that political candidates are welcome to come to meetings AS GUESTS of club members, but they may not speak from the podium, distribute campaign material, or actively campaign before, during, or after the meeting.

A representative of the club sent the following  answer to the political candidate.  If this kind of issue should arise in your club, here is a way of avoiding what could become a sticky situation:

Dear Sir/Madam:

Thank you for your interest in speaking to our club.

Rotary International's Standard Club Constitution, by which all clubs are governed, specifically prohibits such activity at club meetings [Article 13, Section 2: This club shall not endorse or recommend any candidate for public office and shall not discuss at any club meeting the merits or demerits of any such candidate (emphasis added).]

Rotarians work to make their communities and the world better, and part of that involves being knowledgeable about political developments as they affect service to their vocations and communities as well as the pursuit of the Rotary objective of world understanding and peace.
However, we are prohibited from involvement in partisan politics, and our work must remain non-partisan and non-political.

Thank you for your understanding.

Did you know ...

October is Vocational Service Month on the Rotary calendar.

Rotarians have put Service Above Self for more than a century. Through vocational service, Rotarians serve others through their professions and promote high ethical standards.

In honor of Vocational Service Month, all Rotarians are encouraged to apply the skills and talents they use in their professions to their club’s service projects.

If you are looking for a way to serve through ORBRC, let President Charles Crowe know you are interested. There's sure to be a way to put YOUR skills, YOUR talents, and YOUR passion to work to make the world a better place.
