Tennessee's First Breakfast Club - Charles Crowe - President 2009-10

Rotary Club No. 3878 - Oak Ridge, Tennessee - District 6780

VOTED DISTRICT 6780 BEST ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTER - 2007-2008

Volume 30 - No. 8

Karen Bridgeman - Breakfast Bytes Editor

November 9, 2009

Our November 11 program will be presented by Jim Holleman and Cheryl Carson, who are second and third from left in the photo above.

Jim was the Centennial President of the Knoxville Volunteer Rotary Club and led the Group Study Exchange team from our district to the southern-most Rotary district in India last spring. Cheryl was a member of that team and has since joined the North Knoxville club. Jim is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and has worked in commercial real estate brokerage and development for 30 years. Cheryl is the marketing manager for The University of Tennessee Press, is a graduate of Elizabeth City State University and is completing a master's degree in corporate communications at Austin Peay State University.

Come hear how this Rotary Foundation experience has changed their lives!

MEMBERSHIP PROPOSAL

Jim Sloane, M.D., has been proposed for membership in Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club by Roger Olson. He would be loaned the classification Health & Medicine/Physician, which he would share with Fred Barry, Gene Caldwell, Tom Clary, Jim Michel, and Jean Reat.

Jim has visited with the club for several weeks and recently participated in a Preview Meeting during which the privileges and obligations of membership in our club were discussed.

Jim is a urologist in practice with Oak Ridge Urology, PC, and he lives in Oak Ridge with his wife, Allyson, and two youngsters, a son, 7, and daughter, 4.

If you have any objections to this proposal , please send them to orbrc@comcast.net by the end of the day Sunday, Nov. 15.

Online makeup opportunities present interesting, relevant topics

The following make-up for Courtney Henry for 11/4/09 was completed on the Rotary E-Club of Southeast USA and Caribbean site. Courtney filled out the form online but it doesn't send directly to ORBRC like EClubOne does, so she mailed in her review, which follows.

I reviewed article 07-001, "Atomic Energy Renaissance" in 100 words as directed by the E-Club site.

Since I work in Oak Ridge this seemed like a perfect article for me to review. The article is a bit old, from before the presidential election, but talked of both McCain and Obama's desire to see more happening in the US in the nuclear power arena.

It seems with global warming and other issues people are beginning to forget about the past disasters and the perception is that people are more open to nuclear power in the United States.

I think that in the coming years we will continue to see more and more about atomic energy as well as other forms of energy that reduce our carbon footprint and our dependence on both coal and oil.

If YOU are looking for online makeup opportunities, click here for the pdf file that is stored on our club website that presents live links to the many options (or follow the link on the right side of the Meeting Make up page).

Remember that makeups -- online, at another club's meeting, or through committee meetings, service projects, or club social activities -- can be logged up to two weeks before or after a missed meeting.

VETERANS' DAY is WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11.
THANKS TO ALL WHO SERVED!

ORBRC — Nov. 4, 2009, Highlights

by Pat Imperato

Editor's Note: The PR/Communications Committee is working to provide a synopsis of each week's meeting for those who weren't able to attend and for those who WERE present who might have missed a detail or two. If you'd like to help by "covering" a meeting once in a while, please let Pat Powell (email ppowell@infointl.com) know you are interested.

And, yep, writing UP a meeting can count for a meeting makeup (one of those "service to the club" things!).

Guests

Jim Hardy (Mike Morris), Hugh Ward (John Wheeler), Jim Sloan (Roger Olson), Andy Chambers (Andy Boyer), Barry Wortman and Jill Prudden (Gene Caldwell), Sheldon Green (David Mosby).

Announcements

Cathy Toth and the Youth Services Committee need help for the YouthAct Pennies for Peace project and the Christmas parade book collection.  Contact her at cptoth@comcast.net

Andy Boyer completed his Rookie Requirements and traded in his temporary red badge for a standard issue name tag.

Rotary Foundation Month

Jim Roberto (robertojb@ornl.gov) announced that November is Rotary Foundation Month and provided members with background information on how RI Foundation funds are used throughout the year.  ORBRC has been a STAR Club since its inception.  One of its requirements is to average more than $100/member in donations to the RI Foundation Annual Funds Program.

Our donations come back to us through the support the Foundation provides to our area projects and through our participation in RI projects, including Group Study Exchange trips to Germany in 1988 (when Robin Textor led the team), South Africa 1992 (when Pat Postma's late husband, Herman, led the team), Sweden 1987, Pakistan 1991, Argentina 1991, and Brazil 1997.

Oak Ridge High School students have benefited from Ambassadorial Scholarships that are funded by the Foundation. Emily Mitchell and Liz Grabenstein were cultural scholars in 2007, and our club's nominee for an academic year Ambassadorial scholarship, Brennan Roorda, will study in Cairo next year.

On Nov. 11, Jim Holleman from the Knoxville Volunteer Rotary Club will speak about the GSE team he led to India last spring, and on Nov. 18, Dub will describe the Paul Harris Society.

The Foundation is a wonderful force for good in the true spirit of Rotary and needs our support.

Happy $$$$ Highlights

Parker congratulated Lou Rabinowitz with a fine for his picture in The Oak Ridger, which announced his new position with Roane State College where he will serve as the workforce direction connections director. Parker pointed out that Lou was wearing a suit instead of his casual biker spandex.

Ruby Miller was fined for her appearance in The Oak Ridger for getting Keep Anderson County Beautiful officially recognized as an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, a four-year effort.

Karen Bridgeman survived 4 days at Disneyworld with a 2-year old and the "other" grandma.

Jim Michael noted the safe returned of Rotarians from the medical mission trip to Nicaragua that provided care to 1700 individuals including 60 dental patients for Jerry Young. Jerry was delighted in the effective use and return of the field dental chairs that ORBRC helped to fund.

Albert Beasley was happy because the dictionaries have all arrived and are ready for distribution to area third-graders.

Program Notes

Gene Caldwell introduced the two basketball coaches for ORHS, Jill Prudden for the girls' team and Barry Wortman, the boys' coach.  Jill sparkled with enthusiasm as she described her young team (under construction) that has big shoes to follow with prior seasons' star performers.  Three of last year's stars have gone on to play college basketball.  The ORSH girls' basketball team has an impressive record of going to the State Tournament 21 times in 28 years and has won 3 state championships.  Coach Prudden has an amazing 880-185 record.

Coach Wortman described his young team as a centipede putting its shoes on one at a time. He, too, is enthusiastic about their ability to build players' skills and sense of team spirit.

Upcoming 6th Annual Rotary Hoops Classic at Oak Ridge High School

The program was a prelude to rev up your interest and participation in the Thanksgiving weekend Rotary Basketball Classic, an event spearheaded by Gene Caldwell.

A lot of volunteers are needed to run this event smoothly and Gene is promising to give free T-Shirts. Help is needed with ticket sales and collection, concession stand servers, and visiting team hosts and hostesses. He also threw out a challenge for ORBRC Rotarians to provide half-time entertainment. (That could be a real photo-op. Are you up for it?)

On Friday, Nov. 27, four games go from 3:30 to 8 PM, and on Saturday, Nov. 28, four games are played from 2:30 to 7 PM.Gene needs 11 people for each game, and Rotarians, family members, and friends can lend a hand.

Contact Gene at caldwell53@bellsouth.net and volunteer for one or more sessions (2 hours each session). It's a wonderful way to entertain your out-of-town guests and enlist their help as well.
