Tennessee's First Breakfast Club - Charles Crowe - President 2009-10

Rotary Club No. 3878 - Oak Ridge, Tennessee - District 6780

VOTED DISTRICT 6780 BEST ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTER - 2007-2008

Volume 30 - No. 9

Karen Bridgeman - Breakfast Bytes Editor

November 17, 2009

THE ROTARY HOOPS CLASSIC is
Friday and Saturday, Nov 27th and 28th.

The tournament has 2 games each afternoon and 2 games each night. If you count each 2 games as a session, there are 4 sessions.

We need 11 people for each session for a total of 44 volunteers. Since some, like me, will work all 4 sessions, we can get by with less but we need a lot of volunteers. Remember that a number of people may be out of town for Thanksgiving.

PLEASE volunteer for 1 session or as many as you can take.

Please send me an email at caldwell53@bellsouth.net if you haven't already done so. Then I can communicate with the volunteers about assignments.

I need to know what sessions you can work and, if you have worked before, what preferences you have. We don't meet the Wed before the tournament, so I have to do a lot of email, so don't worry about emailing me twice.

Thanks!

Gene Caldwell

As announced at our last meeting,

we will have our next Adopt-A-Street trash

pickup this coming Sunday, Nov. 22, at 3 pm,

starting at the Flatwater Grill parking lot.

Come join us for fun, exercise and camaraderie.

We already have six signed up.

Thanks,

Jim Cape

CONDOLENCES

We extend our sympathies to our fellow Rotarian JIM BRADBURY and his family.

Jim's wife of 56 years, Louise, mother of three and grandmother of three, died Nov. 10 after an extended illness.

Click here for a link to the online obituary and guest book. If you would like to send a card, remember that Jim's address is listed in the club directory on the members'-only, password protected side of our website. (If you need your password, contact us.)

Louise was a self-taught scholar of Egyptology and Near Eastern history. The most famous of her many published articles moved a war 400 miles from the previously assumed Euphrates River location to the S-curve in the Nile. Her theory is now being taught in universities around the world.

Jim's been the champion of our Dictionary Project since its inception and one of the most faithful participants in the Readers & Leaders program. His son, Tom, is a member of the Lenoir City Rotary Club (and was a Rotarian before his dad!).

A memorial service will be held later.

ORBRC — Nov. 11, 2009, Highlights

by Pat Powell

Editor's Note: The PR/Communications Committee is working to provide a synopsis of each week's meeting for those who weren't able to attend and for those who WERE present who might have missed a detail or two. If you'd like to help by "covering" a meeting once in a while, please let Pat Powell
(email ppowell@infointl.com) know you are interested.

And, yep, writing UP a meeting can count for a meeting makeup
(one of those "service to the club" things!).

Charles Crowe, President, opened the meeting on Nov. 11, Veteran's Day, and asked that each member keep in mind the sacrifice that our veterans have made on behalf of our freedoms.

He reminded members that there will be no Wednesday meetings the weeks of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day.  He also announced that Jim Sloan has been proposed for membership by Roger Olsen and suggested that, if other members have new members to propose, paperwork needs to be submitted for approval.

Tony Lester led the introduction of guests and announcements:

  • Courtney Piper, Marketing Director for Adams, Crafts, Hertz, (Ben Adams)
  • Jim Sloan (Roger Olsen)
  • Berl Saylor, Christopher and Connor and Tom Thornburgh (Brenda Thornburgh)
  • Harry Lillard (The Oak Ridge Club)

Linda Brown announced that it is time for our annual Christmas Angels project.  To date, we have 95 children and needs are great in this time of economic downturn.  The names have been provided by the Family Resource Center at Willowbrook.

Gifts will be delivered on the Dec. 19; wrapping dates will be announced.  Because of the short timeframe, Linda stressed the need for people to shop early and get their gifts delivered to her office.

Jim Cape announced the "end of summer" trash pickup date will be on Sunday afternoon, November 22.

Volunteers are asked to meet at 3 p.m. in the Flatwater Restaurant parking lot and bring a "grabber."

Dub Shults announced that, in the June 7-11 drawing, Brenda
Thornburgh won the opportunity to name a Paul Harris Fellow.
Brenda bestowed that honor on her husband, Tom, and her father, Berl Saylor. (See photo at right.)

Tony Lester announced that the next Laurel Theater presentation will be Celtic music, 7:30 p.m. on November 14 and he is looking for season tickets to UT basketball games.

Brenda Thornburgh gave happy dollars for her family members present.

Kelly Callison announced the next meeting of the literacy committee for the afternoon of Nov. 11 at  4 p.m. at the OR Library.

Cathy Toth announced that the YouthAct "Trick or Treat for UNICEF" collected $200 which was matched with another $200 by Norma James, YouthAct club advisor at Robertsville
Middle School.

Pete Peterson gave $48 happy dollars in honor of his 48 years of marriage.

PROGRAM:

Robin Textor introduced the program for the morning which was titled "People, Places, and Things....30 days in Tamil Nadu, India." In his introduction, Robin pointed out that it is a Rotary tradition for members to be dedicated to doing good.  Over the past three years, contributions have been spent primarily on education, Ambassadorial Scholarships, People-to-People Exchange, and programs designed to help people all over the world.

The most recent example of that giving was the trip made to India by Jim Holloman, Knoxville Volunteer Rotary Club, Richard Gary, and Cheryl Carson, Marketing Manager, University of Tennessee Press club.  He pointed out that trips, like this five-week trip, are life-changing events and one result of the trip is that Cheryl has now become a Rotarian.

Jim and Cheryl spoke, giving their interesting accounts of the trip.  Some of their observations and thoughts included:

"People" - SEE PHOTO ABOVE RIGHT - The people with whom they stayed were open and very helpful.  In spite of great language barriers, they managed to find ways to communicate and they got to explore and participate in many everyday activities experienced by the Indian people.  For example, Cheryl got to attend yoga with her hostess. The President of the Rotary Club which she visited was headed by a woman.

"Places"- They were able to visit factories and the Ambassaduram, a Tea Plantation.  The plantation was a soothing and pleasant place and an interesting contrast to city streets (which are crowded, loud, and somewhat dangerous).Palaces and temples provided wonderful examples of spectacular architecture and history.

"Things" - They experienced watching the arduous processes involved in development of various art, including chalk drawings and pictures which, because of the detail, often take two years to complete.   They got to enjoy traditional dance and other customs of the people with whom they met.

They attended the District conference where they got to wear traditional dress of the regions.  It was truly a "Good Will" experience.

Jim ended the presentation with thoughts about the "Power of Rotary."  Through the combined efforts of Rotarians throughout the world, some of the very positive things that have happened in India include the ending of polio through Polio Plus; the organization of many clinics that are bringing healthier living to people throughout the world, particularly in India; and the extreme "good will" that comes out of working together in a worldwide organization intent on improving the lives of people internationally.
