was a hit!

Watch for photos and more information next week!

Adopting a street in our little corner of the world

ORBRC's Adopt-a-Street team, led by Jim Cape has taken on a wonderfully "visible" task -- cleaning up the stretch of Melton Lake
Drive that fronts the river and the Flatwater Grill, our meeting place. Above, Gene Caldwell and Pat Powell cut up while Lydia Birk, Cape, and David Olsen smile for the camera. At left, beneath the Adopt-a-Street sign that acknowledges the club's efforts, Powell and Birk put their "grabbers" to good use. Below, Olsen and Caldwell work behind the scenes and behind the caution sign.

 JOIN THE TEAM

The Adopt-a-Street crew takes on the task of picking up litter along Melton Lake Drive about once every two-three months.

If you'd like to help, listen for an announcement from the podium or let Jim Cape know you are interested.

Family members are welcome on this service project!

Can you spot ORBRC members Brenda Thornburgh, Freda Hopper, Nancy
Donsbach and Sherry Livengood among the recent graduates of the first-ever
District 6780 Rotary Leadership Institute?

Rotary Leadership Institute graduates first class

ORBRC has four new grads

The first-ever Rotary Leadership Institute for District 6780 has just concluded. Rotary districts have sponsored RLI courses since the early 1990s as a way to improve Rotary knowledge and leadership skills for club members as well as to prepare potential club leaders -- committee chairs, project managers, and club officers -- for future opportunities. The classes were on three Saturdays this fall in Cleveland, Tenn., with Rotarians from clubs across the eastern half of the state. ORBRC covered the $85/person cost for each of its participants.

"The courses are designed to provide Rotary knowledge and to develop leadership skills for voluntary organizations," explained Freda Hopper, one of this year's participants and ORBRC's vice president for internal operations. She was joined by President-Elect Nancy Donsbach, Sherry Livengood, and Brenda Thornburgh.

"RLI was an outstanding opportunity for each club to improve the Rotary knowledge of its key people, who were also exposed to new ideas of leadership. All of us completed the courses and received certificates," Freda said.

"Our club was well represented since the four of us have now completed the program and Pat Imperato has only as one more class to complete," Nancy said. "Plus, we were so fortunate to have both Karen Bridgeman and Robin Textor as part of the faculty.

"It was a great time to learn more about Rotary plus get to know better some of the folks in our club as well as make new friends from other clubs in our district."

ORBRC — Nov. 18, 2009, Highlights

by Pat Powell

Editor's Note: The PR/Communications Committee is working to provide a synopsis of each week's meeting for those who weren't able to attend and for those who WERE present who might have missed a detail or two. If you'd like to help by "covering" a meeting once in a while, please let Pat Powell (email ppowell@infointl.com) know you are interested.

And, yep, writing UP a meeting can count for a meeting makeup (one of those "service to the club" things!).

Charles Crowe opened the meeting and asked everyone to remember Jim Bradbury whose wife passed away this past week.

Announcements:  Linda Brown informed the club that we still have 97 angels to be taken care of.  She pointed out that there is no club meeting next week (Nov. 25) and she urged people to participate, either by taking an angel to purchase items for or by donating money and she will find people to shop. Her instructions are that she must have all items delivered to her office by the 11th.  Please have the items wrapped and put together in a big bag with the name of the child carefully marked.

Because the economy is so bad this year, few families have asked for anything but clothes and necessary items. Linda suggests that, if at all possible, you add an age-appropriate toy  and perhaps socks and pajamas to what you provide. If you have any questions, you may contact Linda at 389-1969 or 482-9990 (If you call this number, Joyce, who works for Linda, will also answer if Linda is not there. Joyce is great and she will do everything she can to help you.)

Jim Cape announced that he has eight volunteers signed on to pick up trash at the lake on Sunday afternoon. Others are welcome! Anyone who is able to help should meet at the Flatwater parking lot at 3 p.m. and remember to bring your “grabber”!

Both Martha Hobson and Dub Shults spoke about Foundation Month activities, providing handouts entitled “All You Ever Wanted to Know About the Rotary Foundation, and…”  Dub explained the relationship between Paul Harris Fellows, being a 711 Club Member, and the collection of recognition points. The handout includes information about how many PH Fellows are in our club, as well as how many have attained more than one PH Fellow level of giving.  Additionally, it was pointed out that, in order to be considered a STAR club, each of our members needs to give $100/annually as a sustaining member.  Martha reminded members that giving to the Foundation is not “just about the money.” It is really about all the good things that are accomplished using the contributions of Rotarians around the world!

Parker Hardy, Rooster, announced that Happy Dollars today should be given for things we are thankful for in honor of Thanksgiving. Examples of happy dollars included Joe Lenhard dollars because his picture was in the paper three times and he is grateful that Parker missed all three of them. Ben Andrews gave dollars for Polio Plus.  Alex Zucker spoke about delivering dictionaries and what a wonderful opportunity it was.

Brenda Thornburg announced that she was delighted to be able to contribute $2,500 to Polio Plus on behalf of her company, Galbraith Laboratories, in honor of Dr. Galbraith, who founded the organization.  This is the second year this contribution has been made by Brenda and her company.

Charles announced that there will be no meeting next Wednesday, November 25, because it is Thanksgiving week, and no meeting on December 23, the week of Christmas.

Nancy Donsbach announced the nominating committee -- Randy Shults, Linda Brown, Emily Jernigan, and Nancy -- have met and she offered a slate of officers, which will be voted on in December (watch for more information in an upcoming bulletin.

Pat Postma introduced Pat Imperato, who spoke about activities related to the city's Environmental Quality Advisory Board, the City Council advisory group that is directing the development of a Climate Action Plan for the City of Oak Ridge. Pat Imperato talked about the fact that there is a lot of debate about climate change and what we need to do to be sustainable and protect the resources we have for the future of a “Green Oak Ridge." She mentioned that, in a recent public forum, where  Ruby Miller and Parker Hardy were facilitators, more than 150 ideas were collected about social, economic, and environmental issues that need to be addressed effectively for Oak Ridge to be sustainable. For more information on Pat’s informative talk, members are urged to log on to our club’s website, where a link to Pat's presentation is posted on the Welcome page.

Charles Crowe reminded members that the Board was scheduled to meet immediately following the club meeting.

Jim Palmer let the club in the Four Way Test to close the meeting.
