Bodacious Baked Goods ...

Going, Going, Gone!

From Emily Jernigan

The elves have been busy in the kitchen, and are bringing all sorts of baked goodies to Rotary next week (December 16) for a mini-fundraiser/fun and delicious raffle.

$5 gets you 5 tickets/5 chances, and we're aiming for 100% participation. The more tickets you buy, the better your chances.

You must be present to win! We'll have about 20 items, ranging from cakes to cookies and beyond, for you to take a chance on. You'll never get anything this good this cheap again. Bring your spouse or a friend to join in the fun.

All proceeds go to support ORBRC's projects.

Dictionary Results and More Needs

From Jim Bradbury

1. ORBRC volunteers have completed presenting the books to every third-grader in the Anderson County Schools(for the fourth year) well before Thanksgiving. Congratulations to all the enthusiastic presenters. The noon Rotarians are delivering to the City of Oak Ridge Schools, and Clinton Rotarians are delivering to the City of Clinton schools.

2. We need to replace the anonymous donor of the first two years for the third year at the Morgan County Schools. We could obtain the needed $450 for year three with nine donors of $50 each, and/or fewer donors if some give more, and/or a larger number of donors if many club members want to donate in smaller amounts. We will be taking names and money at the December 9 Breakfast meeting. Volunteers to make the presentations are already being heard from.

3. Thank you to Information International Associates! IIa has stepped up for the second year to provide the dictionaries for all of the Scott County schools. This will allow ordering the books soon. Breakfast Club members and families can volunteer to go to Scott County and make the presentations. We will again team with Rogers Penfield of the West Knoxville Rotary Club for part of the presentation team as a recruiting effort that Rogers is working on to start a Rotary Club in Scott County.

In case you missed it — Dec. 2, 2009, highlights

by Pat Imperato

Editor's Note: The PR/Communications Committee is working to provide a synopsis of each week's meeting for those who weren't able to attend and for those who WERE present who might have missed a detail or two. If you'd like to help by "covering" a meeting once in a while, please let Pat Powell (email ppowell@infointl.com) know you are interested.

And, yep, writing UP a meeting can count for a meeting makeup (one of those "service to the club" things!).

Announcements

  1. Charlie announced that there would be a chartering celebration of a new club in Smith County on December 21st
  2. Nancy Dornsbach reminded us (for Linda Brown) that there was a need for 22 more angels to provide Christmas gifts for needy children.  Money is also a good alternative for "angel Shopper" to buy gifts.  All gifts need to be at Linda Brown's office by December 14th for distribution on December 19th - also requiring volunteer Santa's.  Contact Linda Brown at  865-482-9990 or by email to lbrown@lindabrownrealty.com.
  3. Brenda Thornburg (865-546-1335 or brendathornburgh@comcast.net) announced she and Lynn Cardwell (865-482-1776 lynnc7738@aol.com) needed help in assembling the float this Saturday for the Christmas parade on 12/12.  Help also needed in attending the float during the parade and in distributing books.  Contact Cathy Toth (865-483-6837  or cptoth@comcast.net) to help her collect more than 2000 books for distribution at the parade.
  4. Jim Cape thanked all the volunteers who helped with the clean-up of Melton Hill Road.
  5. Gene Caldwell thanked all those who helped with the Hoops Classic.
  6. Pat Postma (865-482-3296 or ppostma@comcast.net) and Emily Jernigan (865-482-4836 or emily@jernigans.net  requested baked good for the special 12/16 Rotary meeting.  The fellowship committee has planned a fun event at our regular meeting to celebrate the holiday.
  7. Kathy Budai turned in her red badge after completing her initiation duties.  Ok, now who's on sign in duty?
  8. Tony Lester said he will be coordinating the meeting service team in January. Rotarians are needed to volunteer to work at the check-in desk and to help with setting up for the meeting and putting things away after.

Happy Dollars - $38 this week

  1. Tom Lakers sang ($5) Happy 80thbirthday to Dub Shultz.  Who would have guessed?
  2. Parker found some wonderful pictures of Joe Lenhard (when he had hair) in retaliation for Joe's happy dollars at the last meeting because Parker hadn't seen his picture in the paper 3 xs.  Wow, the rooster was crowing this morning.
  3. John Wheeler went to Disney World,
  4. Mike Coffey was happy that he missed being on the train that was recently sabotaged in Russia by 2 weeks. Also his daughter won an art scholarship
  5. Karen Bridgeman is going to be a grandma again - can we stand it- more pictures to share.  Congrats again.

Program

John Wheeler introduced Hugh Ward, the assistant district attorney for the US Circuit Court in Knoxville.  Hugh has lived in Oak Ridge since 1991.  He has been John's guest for a number of meetings and John told us that Ward has been proposed for membership in our Club.

Ward spoke about the notable cases he or his office have been involved with locally, including busting the Market Square drug operation, the selling of secret materials to the French (who being on our side ratted the perpetrator out), and the professor who was careless with allowing access to his laptop with billions of dollars of technical secrets while traveling in China.  They are all now guests of the federal government.

When asked certain questions about his personal views on sensitive issues, Ward gave the "official response," which is all that he is allowed to do while under the employ of the Federal Prosecutor's Office.  Hugh plans to retire at the end of the month to go into private practice.  The audience asked that he share his opinions with us next month.
