Announcements
Pat Imperato provided the club with information about World Rotary Day which is February 23rd, the 104th anniversary of Rotary’s founding. Pat, Linda Brown, Judi Gray, and Karen Bridgeman, along with a “crew” of volunteers, are working on publicity with the Oak Ridger. ORBRC, along with the other two clubs in the city (The Oak Ridge Rotary Club and the Sunset Rotary Club) are planning projects to raise Rotary’s visibility in the community and around the world. They are putting together a full-color special section about RI and the three local clubs that will run in the newspaper during the week leading up to the events. Although all three clubs will be participating in the event, ORBRC will retain the earnings for the ads sold. Club members were encouraged to sign up for ads that range in price from $25 to $500. All ads and money must be turned in by January 30th!
A special thanks was given to Linda Brown and all her helpers for their dedicated work on the Angel project. Thanks to everyone who participated and contributed many the lives of many families were touched and many children received gifts this year.
Jim Palmer announced that he, Jim Rushton, and David Olsen will be attending a seminar in Holland, Michigan, conducted by Aqua Clara International related to our provision of water filters to Haiti.
A total of $9.00 in Happy Dollars was collected.
Speaker – Jim Michael on the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge
Fred Barry introduced Jim Michael, retired cardiologist and medical missionary who presented the program on The Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge which opens next Friday. Michael provided startling statistics: 45,000,000 Americans are living without health insurance. The U.S. ranks last of 23 industrialized countries in providing adequate health care to its citizens. 17% of Anderson County residents live well under the poverty level; 18% are on food stamps (that number rises to 30% for children). The brochure Michael provided states there are 907,100 uninsured people in the state of Tennessee; 146,700 of those are children (statistics provided by the Henry Kaiser Foundation). The Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge is a non-profit volunteer-staffed organization which offers free medical services to people living in Oak Ridge and surrounding areas who do not have health insurance and cannot afford to pay for medical care because of their income level.
Michael credited the idea for the creation of this important clinic to John Auxier, the husband of Mary Lou Whitten, ORBRC member.
Editor's Note: The PR/Communications Committee is working to provide a synopsis of each week's meeting for those who weren't able to attend and for those who WERE present who might have missed a detail or two. If you'd like to help by "covering" a meeting once in a while, please let Pat Powell (email ppowell@infointl.com) know you are interested.
And, yep, writing UP a meeting can count for a meeting makeup (one of those "service to the club" things!).
GREEN PROPOSED FOR MEMBERSHIP IN ORBRC
As was sent out via email on January 5, Sheldon Green has been proposed for membership in ORBRC by David Mosby.
Sheldon is an insurance agency field executive, managing sales agents and representatives in the Oak Ridge/Knoxville area for State Farm Insurance. He lives in Oak Ridge with his family, and he would be loaned the classification of Financial Services/Insurance, joining Ruby Miller in that category.
If you have any objections to this nomination, please send them in writing to
GOOD NEWS and THANK YOUS
Linda Brown
Linda Brown sends a big a thank you for the cards, calls and support during her surgery for breast cancer. Linda says "I got wonderful news this am that the lymph nodes were cancer free and that the surgery was good in that they got the tumor and the area around the tumor was also clear. I just have to wait until I am healed and then begin 6 weeks of radiation."
Charlie Jernigan -update from Emily
He’s home again, and it’s going well. They turned him loose late Thursday, just in time for him to experience the first snow we’ve had here in a while. Dr. Hall (the CT surgeon following him) said as he walked out of room 360, ‘You’re our miracle man of December’ and Charlie and I concur. He still doesn’t remember anything between arriving at the ER and having his vent tube removed, but he does know that he’s a very lucky man. And so are we!
He’s still very weak, and is delighted to be able to sleep in the dining room without being awakened by someone wanting to take his blood pressure or weighing him. Rest and home cooking are going to go a long way towards his recovery. The home health nurse walked me through my first dressing change yesterday, and will be back Monday to check on how he’s doing. PT comes today to help him rebuild his strength.
Because we don’t want him to come down with anything else, and because he needs to use the energy he has to continue to heal, we must limit visitors and phone calls for now. I’m busier than ever now, so please assume that no news is good news as far as hearing from me. I will let everyone know when he’s ready/able to have visitors.
Thank you all for your ongoing good wishes and support.
Love, Emily
DON”T FORGET WORLD ROTARY DAY IS COMING
Watch this space for announcements for World Rotary Day on February 23.
Once again ORBRC will be putting together an insert celebrating Rotary in the Oak Ridger. We will need your help buying ads for the insert. The deadline to order your ad is Jan. 30th. See Pat Imperato for more information.
Reminder from the "new" Breakfast Bytes editor
Please remember to send me news and announcements for the newsletter. Preferrably by Sunday afternoon. I am still learning the tricks of the "trade". Maybe next week I will figure out how to insert pictures and "clip art". Thanks. Lydia Birk at birkla@bellsouth.net.
