Last week's meeting - January 27, 2010

by Pat Powell

Last week's meeting was an ORBRC Club Assembly.

Nancy Donsbach, ORBRC President Elect, led off with a report on her plans for her upcoming term of office.   2010 - 2011 officers were introduced, including David Harris, Freda Hopper, Sgt. at Arms, Sherry Livengood; Vice President - External, Kathy McNeilly; Youth Services Committee, Cathy Toth; and current Service Projects Committee, Brenda Thornburgh.

Brenda reported that Jim Cape continues to oversee the Trash Pickup effort.  One of the major events this year was the 2,000 books that  were dispersed to children from the ORBRC float in the Oak Ridge Christmas Parade.  The goal in the upcoming year is to have two service projects.  Veronica O'Hearn will head up the Service Committee in the coming year.

Roger Olsen announced that the Annual Auction will be on March 10th this year and will be a bit different.  Spouses and friends are welcome to attend on Auction Day.  He provided handouts that described the items that might be donated.  Auction items will be accepted beginning February 17, 2010.  (See below for information on the Auction.)

Foundation Chair, Martha Hobson, reported the following:

ORBRC Annual Giving Fund collected $8,644  for this Rotary year.  (This does not include funds given via credit cards or checks given directly to the Rotary Foundation.)  For ORBRC to be a Star Club (average of $100 a member), we need to give $12,100.  ORBRC has been a Star Club since the Star Club program began a few years ago.  ORBRC gave $4,390 to the Polio Initiative this Rotary year.  We have 147 Paul Harris Fellows, including family members and former members.

Martha reported that we have 5 Benefactors who have pledged to give $1,000 a year as long as they are able to do so.  We have 109 Foundation donors; we have 12 members who have never donated, and we would like to have 100 percent participation.  Martha emphasized that gifts can be modest!

All-time giving for ORBRC is $263,353.53.

Dub Shults and Tom Lakers will have a table in the foyer during the month of February so members can find out how many points they have and what their options are for using the points.

Thanks, Martha, for an extremely comprehensive report on something of great importance to us all!

Jim Palmer is keeping us up-to-date through the newsletter on the ORBRC Clean Water Project for Haiti.

Emily Jernigan gave a report on the wonderful news about Charlie's (Jernigan) recovery and she thanked the many people who provided such great support to them.

Our esteemed Rooster collected $102 Happy Dollars this week (last week's receipts were $104) from a variety of members.

 ROTARY AUCTION - MARCH 10

Join in for the Rotary Auction "FUN Raiser" on March 10.  Roger Olsen and the ORBRC Fellowship Committee need your help and donations.  What can you offer to do with and for your friends in Rotary?  The auction committee plans to have fabulous and funny things you'd love to have. How about a week in Santa Fe?  Or a handmade queen-size quilt in gorgeous blues and yellows? Or an Italian supper delivered to your door by Lou Rabinowitz?  Would you like Bridge lessons, a classic Swiss Army Knife or some sophisticated candlesticks? Would you like someone to give a pool party for any friends you want to invite  Tom Lakers has donated a Dim Sum dinner for 20 (minimum bid $350).  Tom provided a menu that sounds like a veritable feast!

Please let Roger know what you plan to donate.  A list will be posted on the ORBRC web site so you can pre-plan your bidding strategy.   Please RSVP by March 3 to let us know how many quests you plan to bring with you.  Remember, you are highly encouraged to bring your family and friends!

  ANNOUNCEMENTS

The ShelterBox Project - Karen Bridgeman reported that we have reached and exceeded the amounts needed for five ShelterBoxes.  ORBRC members Henry Perry, Bonnie Carroll, and Freda Hopper (the Little Leaf Baptist Church) funded three of the Boxes.   Donations from a variety of our members have funded the fourth and our club funded one from its reserves after a vote by the Board.  According to Karen, we are on our way to Shelter Box No. 6!

For anyone who missed the meeting and does not know what the Shelter Boxes are, here is a quick explanation from Karen:

ShelterBox delivers immediate relief to victims of natural and other disasters anywhere around the world by providing rugged 10-person tents and other survival essentials.   ShelterBox has established three separate operational centers in and around Haiti to help distribute assistance to the estimated one million people left homeless by the devastating January 12 earthquake.  The ShelterBox effort began as a project of the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in Cornwall, England. For more information, go to www.shelterboxusa.org.

The image to the right shows shelter boxes in use in Haiti.

Literacy Update  - Louise Mixon stated that recipients of the last literacy lunch event have been determined.  Requests totaled $38,000; and $14,000 was available to award to those submitting requests.  The Literacy Committee includes, Louise, Jackie Ball, Margaret Beams, Kathy Edwards, Pat Powell, and Randy Shults.
