Notes from last week's meeting - February 24, 2010

by Pat Powell and Karen Bridgeman

Happy Rotary Day!

Guests and visitors: Emily Jernigan led the introduction of guests.
David McCoy's guest was Lisa Lanphear, Resource Director for United Way.
Albert Beasley's guest was Doris Swann;
Gary Gilmartin introduced Julia Hurley from the J.C. Company;
Courtney Henry introduced Roy Hubbs;
Paul Sprague was visiting from the Oak Ridge Rotary Club.

The Rooster, Parker Hardy reported that $32.00 was collected for Happy Dollars.

Announcements:
Dub Shultz reminded club members that this was the last day the Foundation Table would be staffed during the meetings (This has been a great service where members can find out information about their foundation contributions, points, and what they need to do to move to a new level of support.). The 711 campaign begins next week. As a reminder to club members, each Paul Harris Fellow who contributes $50 to the foundation for this campaign will be included in a drawing which occurs when $1,000 has been collected. The individual whose name is drawn will have the choice of naming a new Paul Harris member AND increase his/her Paul Harris level. (This is how Dick Davis honored his wife, Beverly, a couple weeks ago! Dick won the last drawing and Beverly was his chosen honoree.) Sherry Livingood was honored as a Paul Harris member plus 1.

Charles Crowe read a letter from Cookie Spillers, Morristown, publicly thanking Ed Statzer for making her late husband, Charles Gurney, a Paul Harris Fellow. Charles passed away after a long illness, and she was extremely comforted by Ed's very meaningful memorial of Charles in this way.

Emily Jernigan reminded club members that the club auction is March 10th. Members are encouraged to bring a guest, pick out items on which they intend to bid, and/or band together with other members to bid on some of the wonderful opportunities that include a wine tasting, a Dim Sum feast, a trip to Santa Fe in a beautiful condominium, a second condominium in Hawaii (donated by Dub Shults) and many other outstanding selections. New items mentioned include a dinner and Regal Cinema tickets (Nancy Donsbach); a "lab testing" worth $500 from Brenda Thornburg (such as having water tested for metals; a food analysis, or many other possibilities)* ; Mike Morris is offering five bridge lessons for four people.

 Note: Our Rooster, Parker Hardy, made a very valid comment. He said, "Only in Oak Ridge, would one have an opportunity for winning a lab testing!"

Program:
As mentioned above, this was "Happy Rotary Day," the annual club meeting that marks the anniversary of Rotary's founding in 1905. The program this morning featured the Rotary Four-Way Test and what it means in our lives. Karen Bridgeman led a discussion about the meaning behind the words in the test. There were wonderful comments from a variety of members about how they apply it to their everyday personal and professional lives, several people mentioning they apply it to the very simplest things to their professional dealings with customers. Karen had hoped to share the video presentation of "Andy & Elmer's Apple Dumpling Adventure," the children's book that illustrates the Four-Way Test, but technical difficulties led us to a much more meaningful fellowship.
The meeting ended with the Four-Way Test.

In honor of this week's OSCAR's

DID YOU KNOW???

(from the Rotary International web page)

In 1953, the RI Board of Directors authorized the production of a film featuring several Hollywood heavyweights to celebrate Rotary's golden anniversary.

The 1955 movie titled The Great Adventure featured film actor Edward Arnold ( Annie Get Your Gun, Diamond Jim ) and television star Jim Backus ( I Married Joan ), now widely recognized for his role as Thurston Howell III on Gilligan's Island .

Arnold played the lead, Dr. Grayson, a Rotarian who hosts a barbecue for six Rotary Foundation Fellows (now called Ambassadorial Scholars). Backus played Larry Matheson, a friend of Grayson's whose questions about Rotary lead into segments describing the founding of the organization, The Four-Way Test, and what it means to be a Rotarian.

Sujata, of the famous East Indian and Tibetan dance team Sujata-Asoka, played the role of scholar Usha Rani Tagore. She and the other scholars reminisce about their homelands -- Australia, Brazil, India, Japan, Scandinavia, and Scotland -- in flashbacks that illustrate the local significance and unifying ideals of Rotary clubs around the world.

The film was written by Leo Rosencrans, produced by Jerry Fairbanks Productions, and directed by Harold Schuster ( My Friend Flicka, The Tender Years).

Filming began in Hollywood in April 1954. English, French, and Spanish versions of the movie were distributed on 16 mm film to clubs and districts for use during and after the semicentennial year.

The 30-minute movie is included in English on The Rotary Heritage Collection DVD (020), available for purchase at shop.rotary.org.
