Members were reminded and reminded to sign up to attend the District 6780 Conference which is scheduled for April 16 - 17, 2010 at the Chattanooga Convention Center, Chattanooga, TN.

Kelly Callison provided a brief overview of the Rotary/Altrusa Literacy lunch held on 18th and he thanked everyone for their participation and attendance.

Karen Bridgeman made an announcement on behalf of Linda Brown reminding members to "gather at the river" on March 27th to participate in the next scheduled trash pickup event. Those participating should gather at the Pavilion near the Marina (Old China Palace) between 8 and 8:15 a.m. She reminded everyone to bring gloves and "grabbers". The Youth Act Club will join in - everyone is welcome to come and bring helpers.

Pat Postma announced there would be a 5 minute Program Committee meeting following this meeting.

Martha Hobson announced that there is still a need for a few more people to submit checks for the drawing for the Paul Harris 7/11 club. One lucky person will become a Paul Harris member after the drawing!

David Coffey introduced John Burleson, a former member of our club, and named him as a new Paul Harris member. He stated that his reason for doing so was that John had been instrumental in achieving success in the recent campaign for Roane State. According to David, the campaign was stalled, and John was able to breathe new life into is. Because of John's efforts, the new initiative is 50% over the design status.

Rooster O'Hardy (nee Parker Hardy) returned this morning, announcing his Economic Modeling of the Rotary Rooster Phase.

Ruby Miller Gave $50 in honor of her 20th anniversary in her managing her State Farm office. She announced that she is hosting a drop in anniversary celebration this coming Tuesday from 10 to 6 p.m.

Tom Lakers announced a website he would like everyone to visit "Lakers for Governor.com". His nephew is running for governor of Nebraska. The Rooster fined him $.75 for a political announcement.

Karen Bridgeman talked about her PETS program - she has trained many Rotary Club Presidents.

Approximately $64.50 was raised in Happy Dollars this morning.

Andy thanked the Auction Committee and the many contributors.

The Program:

Gary Gilmartin introduced the Speaker, Dan Ryan, Executive Search Services, who spoke on Social Media and Social Works. In his talk, Ryan gave many examples of the changes that social media is changing the way we do business, the way we interact with others, and the changes in communication throughout the world. For example, he mentioned that Linked In, which has a business focus, has 60 million users and is growing daily. He mentioned that the Wall Street Journal now has a video and web presence. He compared the changes in communication today as the difference between the Flintstones and the Jetsons. He mentioned http://www.ping.fm as being is a wonderful new site that allows communication across many of the other services in which an integration of networks work together.
With the new communication, of course, comes new challenges and he anticipates the legal profession will grow greatly in upcoming years.
Tony Lester, Rotary member, interjected that ORAU's program with the Centers for Disease Control, has 15 people who use only social media to provide public health messaging. They are focusing on a public health service which links young mothers together to learn about the growing concern about a link between autism and vaccines.

President's Elect Training

sumitted by Nancy Donsach

Last weekend, I had the honor of attending Rotary's President Elect Training Seminar (PETS) in Nashville. With Rotary (and the U.S. Government!) acronyms are quite prevalent and the PETS acronym was displayed proudly through out the Sheraton Music City Hotel. On Friday as I was getting ready to go into the first session a gentleman approached me and said "May I ask you a question...just what is this?"  I started to give him my favorite "what is Rotary" explanation...when he said, "Oh no, I have heard of Rotary, I just wanted to know if this was a Rotary meeting for PET lovers!"

And so for the next few days....Like the gentleman who asked me "what is this" - I learned what PETS really was; a training session for over 300 President Elects from Rotary Clubs in 6 different districts from Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky; plus, over 40 trainers and another 40 volunteers willing to give up their weekend time to ensure our year as presidents goes as smoothly as possible. As Presidents Elect, we had classes on everything from how to plan and execute service projects to how to fund these projects -from successful fundraisers to matching District Simplified Grants. In addition, the PEs (now I am using acronyms) had opportunities to discuss with each other what their clubs have done or are planning to do.

The entire weekend was extremely well organized and the quality of the individual sessions was impressive. I was not surprised; however, once I learned our own Past District Governor, Robin Textor and his wife, Charlotte, were in charge of registration. And Karen Bridgeman another one of our own, was a trainer and involved with planning the curriculum.

The Keynote Speakers were excellent and included, John Germ, Glenn Estess and Ed Futa. It was an amazing group of speakers that engaged your attention and revived your spirit. You did not mind that you had been in class since 8 o'clock that morning. And unless, you were a Kentucky Fan you were even copasetic with missing most of March Madness!

To be able to see and hear their passion for serving other was truly inspirational; and to listen to the one and only, John Germ and learn that we will eradicate Polio from the face of this earth as early as next year gave me goose bumps! In summary, I am truly honored that I was able to attend this seminar and learn as much as possible about being president of our club for 2010-2011.

Plus, after seeing how impressive this weekend was and the quality of sessions and speakers, I urge each of you to make plans to attend our District Conference in Chattanooga on 4/16-4/17.
