Notes from Rotary Meeting - 3/31/10

Contributed by Pat Powell and Karen Bridgeman

Charles Crowe, Club President, opened the meeting and welcomed members and guests.

Mike Baker introduced guests and visitors.

Announcements:

Members were reminded and reminded to sign up to attend the District 6780 Conference which is scheduled for April 16 - 17, 2010 at the Chattanooga Convention Center, Chattanooga, TN.
Linda Brown thanked those members who "gathered at the river" on Saturday, March 27th and who participated in the trash pickup event. In addition to our regular members, there were approximately 10 members of The Youth Act Club who helped. Apparently, there were a number of extremely interesting "treasures" found and a number of older folks who went home with a sore back!

Brenda Thornburgh let the club know that Dr. Tom Clary, our one and only pediatrician, was injured at Talladega in a motorcycle accident - thoughts and prayers to him in his recovery from several broken bones.

Courtney Henry got a round of applause when she announced that Rooster Hardy was not present and that she would be serving in his capacity. She also announced that she is more than half way to meeting her goal of $1,000 for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters fundraising.

Courtney reported raising $56 in Happy Dollars.

The Program:

Ken Green was the speaker, introduced by Pat Postma. Ken talked about the challenges ahead as the Oak Ridge school system strives to prepare all its students for college and the work force.
Ken's excellent presentation came from a large-form handout that he had reduced to tiny type - and while he apologized for it, he also agreed to make it available for members to download from our club website. He also agreed to provide a copy of his presentation. Both will be posted to our club website - look for a link on the front page of www.orbrc.org.
