Notes from Rotary Meeting - April 14, 2010
Contributed by Pat Powell
Charles Crowe, Club President, opened the meeting and welcomed members and guests.
Guests and Visitors:
Lynn Cardwell introduced guests and visitors that included Lucy Gibson from the West Knox Rotary Club Lisa Lamphere and Austin Lance, both of whom have been recommended for membership. Bonnie Carroll introduced Lea Ann Anderson and Scott Rayder, from Computer Sciences Corporation, Washington, DC.
Other Announcements: Members were reminded and reminded to sign up to attend the District 6780 Conference which is scheduled for April 16 - 17, 2010 at the Chattanooga Convention Center, Chattanooga, TN. The District Awards Luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m.
Tom Clary was welcomed back - he was absent last week because of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident at Talladega...he reports he is healing very well.
Flyers were on the tables announcing a "Boy's Night Out" event on April 17th from 17 to 10 p.m. at the Oak Ridge Civic Center Pavilion. Attendance is free, but donations will be accepted to benefit cancer patients at Children's Hospital in Knoxville.
Charles Crowe asked that club members keep Karen and Ron Bridgeman in their thoughts in upcoming days. Ron is having eye surgery. Karen, per her normal mode of operation, was present before this meeting to ensure that the systems were working and that things were in order for the meeting.
Dub Shultz introduced Sid Powell as our club's newest Paul Harris Fellow. As is our custom, Dub asked all PH Fellows in the club to rise as he presented Sid with a pin and certificate. Sid was designated as a Paul Harris Fellow by his wife, Pat, who, in a statement following the ceremony stated, "Of all the people I know, although he is not a Rotarian, the person who most embodies the "Rotary Four Way Test" for me is my husband, Sid Powell. It is my great pleasure to see him made a Paul Harris Fellow!"
Our esteemed rooster, Parker Hardy, was back this week and reported raising $47 in Happy Dollars.
The Program:
Ken Brady introduced Matt Reedy, City Staff Liaison between the Oak Ridge City Council and the Youth Advisory Board (YAB), a group dedicated to help promote education and information between the City Council and the youth of Oak Ridge. In addition to the many other activities promoted by the YAB, they work closely with the Graduation Celebration Foundation Board to develop, organize, and manage the annual event at Oak Ridge High School (ORHS) which provides a safe haven for seniors on graduation night. Community leaders and groups along with the city and foundation provide thousands of dollars in prizes, scholarships, and monetary gifts throughout the graduation celebration. These and other enticements and lots of fun are credited with keeping the graduates off the roads on what has become a dangerous evening for graduating seniors across the country. This celebration which began in 1997, hosted 83% of the ORHS Class of 2009. Over 220 volunteers and thousands of dollars contributed to the evening's success. It should be noted that Rotary, and many of our members and companies are actively involved in supporting this outstanding and exremely successful event each year.
