Notes from Rotary Meeting - April 21, 2010

Contributed by Pat Powell with help from Karen Bridgeman

Charles Crowe, Club President, opened the meeting and welcomed members and guests.

Christina Young, Louise Mixon, and Gail Mattson led the members in singing around Row, Row, Row Your Boat (members sounded surprisingly good!); Lou Rabinowitz led the pledge to the flag (after first having to find and move it!); and Martha Hobson led the Invocation.

Guests and Vistors:

Kerry Trammell introduced guests and visitors that included:

David Flitcroft from The Rotary Club;

Lisa Lamphere and Austin Lance, both of whom have been recommended for membership (introduced by their sponsors Roger Olsen and David McCoy).

Martha Hobson introduced her spouse, David Hobson;

Bo Harris, past president of this club, was in attendance;

Cathy Toth introduced two members from the Robertsville Youth Club, Grace Malone and Reed Copeland (see below for their purpose in being in attendance).

Annoucements:

Charles Crowe report on events at the District 6780 Conference which was held April 16 - 17, 2010, at the Chattanooga Convention Center, Chattanooga, TN. Charles reported that our club can take great pride in the many awards we received during the conference, including the District Governor's Citation of Excellence for 2009-2010. That award was presented "in recognition of excellent achievements in all avenues of service in District 6780 events", dated 4/17/10 and signed by District Governor Carol Foster. We were named "Rotary District Star Club for 2009-2010". We were recognized for our annual giving fund in which we "help build a world full of goodwill, and better understanding". Lastly, but not least, we were recognized as a part of the "Eradicator Club", helping to end polio throughout the world.

Paul Harris Award: Martha Hobson recognized Jim Rushton as our club's newest Paul Harris Fellow and she provided him with a pin and certificate.

Rooster: Parker Hardy fined Ben Andrews for being named the Oak Ridge Utility District's "Manager of the Year" and David Mosby for activities related to the City Council's "night out".
Happy Dollars!

Karen Bridgeman gave an update on her husband, Ron, who had eye surgery very recently. The doctor seems to think things are going very well, but Ron is still having difficulty seeing and can use everyone's thoughts and prayers.

Cathy Toth had previously introduced two members of the Robertsville Youth Club, Grace Malone and Reed Copeland, who were present at this meeting to provide members with an "opportunity" to purchase t-shirts. The club's goal is to raise $2,000 to support the need for shelter boxes in Haiti. Cathy made a special effort to thank club members - our club donated the money to purchase the t-shirts; all funds raised through their sale will go directly to benefit the Haiti Project.

Louise Mixon gave happy dollars for the opportunity she and her husband, Bill, have had to house the GSA Team from Taiwan. She said it was a great experience and they are looking forward to having the Team back before they leave the U.S.

Pat Postma gave happy dollars in honor of her son-in-law, Philip Khinda, who has had a major role in the recent events surrounding Calpers . (For a full description, Calpers can be Googled. )

Parker reported raising $45 in Happy Dollars.

Please keep Courtney and Brian Henry in your thoughts and prayers.

Brian was in a serious automobile accident last week and is at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA undergoing rehabilitation.  Please check in to the CaringBridge.org, type in "BrianHenry" and send them your best wishes.

If you would like to help out, the United Way of Anderson County is collecting "gas gift cards" for Courtney to help defray the cost of traveling to Atlanta.  Please drop the cards off at the United Way office.
