LITERACY LUNCHEON SUCCESS

filled the ORHS Food Court at Noon last Thursday!

 

Thanks to all whose hard work supported this effort to raise funds for the fight against illiteracy, especially Louise Mixon, Pat Powell, and
Ken Green (next year's chair).

 

Larry Dipboye's invocation used words from Lincoln and captured much of what so many of us feel:

 

As we gather to share, not only this meal of friendship but the challenge of universal literacy, may God bless both the passing moment of pleasant conversation and the multiple lifetimes of human accomplishment extended through this event to our neighbors.

 

Our thoughts turn to Abraham Lincoln, whom Sidney Mead called, "the spiritual center of American history," whose legendary knowledge of the Bible began with learning to read in an Indiana log schoolhouse.

 

Who declared, "I care not much for a man's religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it."

 

Who decried political claims of divine favor and confessed, "my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God's side."

 

Who prayed, "that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people,
shall not perish from the earth."

 

Who invoked on this nation a benediction that continues to challenge our sense of responsibility: 

"With Malice toward none, with charity for all,

with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in,

to bind up the nation's wounds."


 

 

DUES STATEMENTS EMAILED

 

Treasurer Robert Weir emailed statements for the next round of dues weekend before last.

If you did not receive yours, please let us know.

 

Note that dues are DUE May 1 for the 2009-10 Rotary year. $500 pays your dues for the full year; $260 pays six-months' worth and your next invoice will be mailed September 15 (with a due date of November 1).

 


 

 

ANNUAL TRASH BASH

SATURDAY!

 

Meet at the pavillion near the playground and parking lot at 9 a.m. (close to China Palace/Rowing Shelter)

Linda Brown will lead our riverbank cleanup project along the shores of Melton Lake.

 

This long-term club project, started umpteen years ago, is a great time for fellowship and is open to family members and members of our newly chartered Robertsville Middle School YouthAct Club. Click here to contact us for more details. 

 


The President requests your attention ...

 

ORBRC President Randy sent an email Monday night to all voting members of the club, asking for consideration of a request from our district governor.

 

Simply put, the question is: Should District 6780 apply to participate as a pilot district in a new way of managing grants from The Rotary Foundation? You also can click this link http://www.rotary.org/en/Pages/ridefault.aspx to read more on the Rotary International website.

 

According to DG Carol, who will be our speaker this week, 44 districts across the world have already applied for the 100 spots in the Future Vision Plan pilot project, with 175-200 applications expected before the May 15 deadline.

 

"The Trustees believe the Future Vision Plan simplifies Foundation programs and administration, aligns outcomes with the mission of the Foundation, increases ownership at the local level, and provides necessary funding and resources to achieve the goals of our Foundation," Mark Maloney, Future Vision Committee member and past RI director, told regional Rotary Foundation coordinators (RRFCs) March 9 during an annual training meeting in Chicago.

 

The Future Vision pilot, which will begin 1 July 2010, is a three-year test of a new grant structure. Districts have until 15 May to apply online to be part of the pilot.

 

To simplify the grant-making process, the plan offers only two types of grants: Rotary Foundation District Grants and Rotary Foundation Global Grants. District grants, modeled after the existing District Simplified Grants, are block grants made to districts for up to 50 percent of their District Designated Fund and can be used for a wide variety of activities. Global grants support larger, international projects with sustainable, high-impact outcomes in one of the six areas of focus.

DISTRICT CONFERENCE ...

COMING TO AN EVENT CENTER NEAR YOU April 17 and 18

 

Remember how much fun we had a last year's district conference when our own Robin Textor was District Governor? Well, this year we don't have nearly as many responsibilities AND the conference in Sevierville is MUCH closer to home!

 

Join with Rotarians from the 65 clubs across our district to celebrate the ways we've made dreams real.

 

The club will reimburse the full $25 registration fee for any club members who attend the conference, and the program promises to be interesting. Guest speakers include Rotary International President's Representative and former RI President Bill Boyd of New Zealand; PolioPlus Manager Carol Pandak; WBIR-TV's Bill Williams; and David Dotson, president of the Dollywood Foundation. Children will sing and dance. Awards will be given and adult beverages will be consumed. Not all at the same time.

 

Also-Our-Own Henry Perry will perform in the Saturday night talent show, as will the aforementioned Robin Textor, dignified former governor of our august district (in a somewhat less dignified manner, if rumors are to be believed).
