Album Name: Christmas Float & Parade 2008 Return to Albums
Album Date: Dec 13, 2008
Description: Our second-ever float in the city's Christmas parade won the "Good Neighbor Award," and volunteers distributed more than 2000 "gently used" books to the children of our community. It was 26 degrees Dec. 6, the day the float was constructed, and not much warmer on Dec. 13 for the parade itself. Breakfast Rotarians constructed the float in Dan Quinn's driveway. YouthAct members from Robertsville Middle School collected and sorted children's books they handed out at the parade.

Tracy Larabee, CPA, mans the drill - it's a first! - while (L-R) Henry Perry, Kathy McMillan, Roger Olson, and Lynn Cardwell take the measure of the Rotary wheels as the float project gets rolling. Roger Olson, Henry Perry, Tracy Larabee, Emily Jernigan, and Lynn Cardwell huddle in the 26 degree weather to figure out how to attach those Rotary wheels to the float. Tracy's ready to drill! Dan Quinn, kneeling, shows Tracy Larabee how to pull out the tape measure. Reading those numbers is a piece of cake for Tracy, however! (L-R) Lynn Cardwell and Jim Cape make sure Dan Quinn makes the right cut. Roger Olson measures twice to determine the length of the float's sides. Lynn Cardwell and Jim Cape need something to do.
Dan Quinn verifies the measurement of the next board before cutting. Lynn Cardwell steadies the side before it's attached. Robertsville Middle School YouthAct students, with Principal and Rotarian Mike Baker, volunteered to come out on a Saturday morning, in 26 degree weather, to sort the children's books they collected to hand out at the Christmas parade. Mike Baker, RMS Principal and Breakfast Rotarian, helps YouthAct students sort the children's books they collected at school to hand out from the float at the Christmas parade. RMS YouthAct students discuss the books they're sorting to hand out at the Christmas parade.
Boxes of books, ready to be passed out to kids on the parade route. Nelson Patterson -- and boxes of books. Nelson, an avid comic book collector, shared some of his collection with kids on the parade route. Lydia Birk (left) and Kathy McNeilly, walking the parade route next to the float. Reading: It's a gift! Nelson Patterson checks out the float before the parade begins.
Gordon Fee checks out the YouthAct kids as they begin their work passing out the books they helped collect. Walking, walking, walking ... somehow this seemed like a good idea when we were planning in at school (inside ... where it was warm ... in the morning ... weeks ago). Still walking (and being grateful to David Harris and Citizens First Bank for the bags!). Tracy Larabee -- orange Santa hat and all. Leigha Edwards -- Postma Young Professional medal winner, one of the region's
Bye 'til next year. Congrats to all who worked on this
