About Our Club - Club Structure

Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club members elect most of their officers to one-year terms, which begin on July 1. The president-nominee serves from the time of election until taking the office of president-elect on July 1, and president on July 1 the following year.

In addition to the president-nominee, the slate of officers includes a vice president for internal operations, a vice president for external operations, a secretary, and a treasurer. The president-elect may select any previous president (including the soon-to-be past-president) of the club to serve on the board of directors as past-president.

The secretary and the two vice presidents are the officers who serve as the voting voice on the board of directors for the standing committees.

The standing committees specified in the club's bylaws and their respective officers are:

  • Membership (Secretary)
  • Service Projects (VP-External Operations)
  • Public Relations (VP-External Operations)
  • Foundations (VP-Internal Operations)
  • Club Administration (VP-Internal Operations)

Two committees were added to the structure in the 2007-2008 year: Youth Activities and Fundraising, with the president-elect and past-president, respectively, designated as their chairs.

AD HOC COMMITTEES for 2007-2008

Fund Raising - With the philosophy that dues support the operation of the club, this committee will explore fund-raising activities to support the charitable works of the club that are not funded by charity- or project-specific activities (i.e., the annual Literacy Lunch).

GOAL: By February 2008, develop a fund-raising plan for the club that will result in funds available through the ORBRC Foundation for use in the 2008-2009 Rotary year, and develop a long-range plan for the continuation of such funding on a schedule that raises money the year before the funds are spent.

Chair 2007-2008: Past-President Linda Brown (Long-range plan is that President-Elect will chair this committee so that funds raised are spent in the year the PE leads the club.)

Youth Leadership and Service - This committee will explore the ways by which the club can formalize its interest in promoting leadership and service for young people in our area, and determine the long-range feasibility of extending such service, first in Oak Ridge, and then throughout Anderson County

GOAL: By January 2008, sponsor formation of at least one YouthAct youth leadership/service organization for area middle school students ages 11-14, Interact for area high school students ages 14-18 (Anderson County or Clinton High School), or Rotaract (Roane State Community College; 18- to 30-year-olds) and develop a plan for sustained support and interaction. By May 2008, develop a plan for extending the effort throughout the area.

(Long-range plan calls for a re-evaluation of whether this committee should become a larger subcommittee under Service Projects or whether our club bylaws should be amended to make this a standing committee.)

Chair 2007-2008: President-Elect Randy Shults

Other Standing Committees

Nominating Committee - Committee is made up of the Immediate Past-President; the President-Elect, who serves as chair; and three other club members named by the Club President. Per bylaws, committee members are appointed no later than mid-October; slate is reported to Club no later than mid-November; and election held at second meeting in December. To help ensure continuity, committee considers current leaders (officers and committee chairs) for leadership roles; to encourage diversity and wide representation, committee considers mix of gender, race, age, as well as prior service to club. Club members are encouraged to make suggestions to Nominating Committee members and to let committee members know if they are interested in serving in a leadership role.

Rotarian of the Year Award - Honors exceptional service by an ORBRC member according to a list of criteria distributed to all Club members, who make nominations. Managed by previous year's winner of Rotarian of the Year; committee made up of past winners.

Service Above Self Award - Honors sacrificial service by a non-Rotarian outside the expectations of that person's paid position/employment. Managed by the Club's Council of Past Presidents.

Public Servant Award - Honors vocational service "above and beyond" the job expectations for a municipal employee. Managed by the Club's Council of Past Presidents.

 STANDING MEETINGS

The board of directors meets right after the regular club meeting on the second Wednesday of each month. All members of the club are invited to attend.

Preview meetings, to which prospective members and their sponsors are invited by the board of directors, are often held after the regular club meeting on the third Wednesday of each month.

“Rotary Rookies and Regulars” provides a poster session on some aspect of Rotary, usually on the third Wednesday of each month. The session is informal and provides a “stand up” conversation on a topic with some visuals. Members familiar with the material provide information and answer questions. The presentation is set up by 6:45 a.m. and remains up after the meeting.

Orientation meetings for new members are scheduled within six weeks of induction at the convenience of the orientation volunteers, new members, and sponsors. The Rookies' worksheet, which lists tasks to be completed before the "Red Badge of Courage" awarded upon induction can be exchanged for a blue membership badge, can be found in the Club Documents section of the in the MEMBERS ONLY  site, accessible by password to current members of the club. More information about the club structure and operations also can be found there. For more information, contact any officer.
